Reader MacDuff has been breaking down each week's PGA Tour play and computing a points list for us to see how the PGA Tour's "FedEx Cup" would play out when it commences in 2007. Here is the points breakdown he's using, with this year's Sony Open in Hawaii providing a sampling.
2500 This is the MacDuff Golf Rankings
1950 Point System, whereby a point value
1900 is given to the top 70 players and ties
1850 in a golf tournament.
1800 The winner - 1 - gains 2500 points;
1750 Second - 2 - gains 1950 points and
1700 so on.
1650 In the event that two or more players
1600 tie, they share equally the point values
1550 of those respective places, for example
1500 14 and 15 share 2825 points, therefore
1475 accruing 1412.5 points each.
1450
1425 In the event of the field having more
1400 than 70 players, those at the bottom,
1375 70th and beyond, would all receive
1350 25 points each. If these tied players
1325 included the 69th place or higher,
1300 they would share point value for 69th
1275 plus 70th and ties equally.
