"They need to start over anyway.”

From Rex Hoggard posting on the Golfweek blog:

Big talk on the practice range here at the Tesoro Club, site of this week’s PGA Tour stop, is on the wild fires that were raging in southern California.

One update late in the afternoon suggested Torrey Pines, site of the annual Buick Invitational and next year’s U.S. Open, is in danger of being scorched. “Good,” snorted one player, among the many who don’t like the changes to the venerable South Course, “they need to start over anyway.”

I'm so sick of hearing the players bitch about the courses they play. How many former players have created courses greater than Torrery Pines South? Two or three? He might not be joking about the course burning down if it was his family who was evactuating. He should just shut up.

Players who have created courses better than Torrey Pines? Few players are architects, fewer still are any good at architecture.

With due respect, the question should be how many architects have screwed up a course as good as Torrey Pines was? One comes to mind.
