"Captain Jack is already calling him Jacques."

sept28_austin_600x438.jpgGolf World's Jim Moriarty says Woody Austin better learn to deal with YouTube fame and teammate ribbing after his day two Presidents Cup dive (still not posted on YouTube, a full 8 hours after).

And, of course, what can you say about Woody Austin, having set the world butterfly record in the lake on the 14th hole and then birdieing three of the last four holes to gain a halve? Maybe they should add the dunking stool to the team room. The Christmas list is no doubt already being compiled on the U.S. team bus for their Rookie of the Year. Flippers and mask. Wet suit. Spear gun. Styrofoam noodles. Life vest. A professional will often try a risky play from a hazard but rarely do they wind up fully submerged. Captain Jack is already calling him Jacques.

At least Woody will never again have to look at the video clip of him beating himself over the head with his putter at Hilton Head. They've got something much, much better now.

"Put the two together," said his playing partner David Toms, "and you'd be, 'What's this guy all about?' But, I'll tell you what, he's a heckuva golfer."

Meanwhile, at least golf.com has the sequence from Getty Images' Timothy Clary, including the shot seen above.

Suddenly I feel the urge to actually purchase the PGA Tour's Presidents Cup official DVD that I thought seemed like a laughable concept only the day before. At least Woody has made everybody forget the putter-over-the-head incident.

Keep it going Wood! Great clutch stuff today too. Love that Jack put Woody and Phil back together for the morning.

I just hope that Woody, a wonderful player with a gargantuan boulder on his shoulder, realizes that everyone is laughing WITH him this time. And please let us all make sure that the three closing birdies after the splash go down in history as part of the plot!

God, I hate to be, you know, snarky, but couldn't Woody have made his ballet move a little more dramatic?

Just kidding. Who's been dramatically using his sticks to wow us for the last few months. Thanks, Woody, for making golf a lot of fun this year. But don't go an disappear on us. We'll miss those shirts.
Though I thought he was NUTS with his contention that he was "playing" better than Tiger, after the hype about his ball-striking being the best since Moe Norman's I've got to re-think my thoughts.

Now I think this: I hope he parlays his slo-mo water ballet into big bucks and as a spokesman of the game becomes, if not the new Moe Norman, at least the new millenium's Casey Stengel.

did anyone notice that Woody's club hit the water on his backswing...

...pretty sure this is a violation of the rules? wonder if he called himself on it?

I've never had any problem with Woody, but only because Tiger was standing right there and said there was no problem am I willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that putt.

Kind of surprised no mention was made of him hitting the water on the backswing (assuming it's the same as hitting sand in the bunker on backswing).

I should correct myself here. after closely looking at a number of replays it appears to me me that Woody actually brushed the weeds on the backswing and the weeds made the water move.

rule 13-4 directly addresses the situation and says if you do not ground the club in the hazard (the water in this instance) you can brush grass/weeds on the backswing...

it does look like Woody hovered the club above the water and then brushed the weeds on the backswing.

sorry Woody.
