"According to Williams" **

Yesterday I mistakenly linked to Lawrence Donegan's Guardian version of the Steve Williams-calls-Phil Mickelson names story instead of the original by Murray Hills. I have corrected the link mix up on the post below.

However, my screw-up proved revealing (yes, I'm justifying blogging sloppiness!).

A reader called into question the Hills' story suggestion that the U.S. Open "Nice tits" tale took place during round 3, when we all know Tiger Woods and Phil only played together in rounds 1 and 2. The reader directed their criticism at Donegan, who clarified Hills's mistake here, why he wrote his story accordingly, while also revealing that it seems Williams, telling the tale to a group of 250, most likely made the story up.

Now, I should have known something was amiss with the Williams story since I was at Torrey Pines every day, followed the elite Tiger-Phil-Scott pairing most of the way and never heard about this happening. Other writers I've checked with say this was the first they've heard of it. And as several have noted, including Donegan in his post here, the tale sounds similar to a story about Monty that has made the rounds for years.

It's hard to imagine Stevie surviving this latest episode if it delivers the expected high humiliation factor on Tiger's lap. It's certainly not the Christmas gift Tiger wanted from his caddy on the eve of this week's event at Sherwood where Tiger hosts a press conference.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I suspect it is a running joke on tour and Stevie stated that as the truth. I do know that in the book (I think it was) Who's Your Caddy he related a similar story about Phil. He said the players hate him because he is such a prick to use Stevie's words. The author states nickname is FIGJAM.

I find the extreme comments regarding the personality of Phil and Tiger a bit puzzling.

It appears to me there is a clear cut case that Phil does better with strangers (i.e., the "public") than Woods.

It also seems Woods does better with acquaintances (e.g., many inside the ropes) than Phil.

When it comes to close friends, who knows?
They may each be great.

The best comment I ever read on Steve Williams..." Stevie somehow thinks he's the fifth Beatle"

That sums up that moron.

Stevie complains that Phil gives him no respect? You're a caddy...and also a prick.

Here again, someone says something interesting, and everybody jumps all over hi...

Nah. My tolerance for "color" doesn't extend to apocrypha told as truth. Steve's an ass, Tiger's Luca Brasi, and I'll feel better about canonizing St. Eldrick when he gets rid of the jerk.

I do like Greg Ford's reference to Beth Page. Bettie's difficult sister?

Tiger was once asked what Phil was doing at home for such an extended time after the birth of his youngest child. "Breast-feeding" was Tiger's deadpan answer. I don't think he will give Williams a hard time over his remarks.

Would this be a bigger story if Bones called Tiger a prick?

Sheesh. I go out of town for a few days and all hell breaks loose.

The answer to Tighthead's question is: Does a Bear Sh*t in the Woods?

Eldrick the Magnificent will probably give Li'l Stevie, the Camera Drowner, a pass. Remember, Eldrick the Magnificent fired Fluff because of an article on caddies that he participated in for one of the golf magazines and for making that motel commercial. But Young Eldrick has become much more of a Li'l god himself since then. Stevie is a Li'l godlet. Infallible, both.
