"I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

Reader Tim clearly wants to get me in trouble. From an unbylined AP story:

President Bush said Tuesday he was disappointed in "flawed intelligence" before the Iraq war and was concerned that if a Democrat wins the presidency in November and withdrew troops prematurely it could "eventually lead to another attack on the United States."
Don't worry, we'll get to the golf part. I just wanted to share that precious snowflake.
In an interview with Politico magazine and Yahoo News, Bush also said he gave up golf in 2003 out of respect for U.S. soldiers killed in the war, which has now lasted more than five years.

"I didn't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

When you can go fishing off Kennebunkport, dance around like a fool and hold hands with the King of Saudi Arabia, golf would send the wrong message?

The sport is doomed!

what about landing on an aircraft carrier with a big "mission accomplished" banner?

we got the message and will be sending one right back to you in november!

Once again the world's most prominent moron confirms his stature as the greatest moron to ever become President. This guy makes Jimmy Carter look sophisticated.

That 'Mission Accomplished' banner made some great guest appearances on Arrested Development. It was one of the better comedic moments for the Dubya regime.

this guy basically parodies himself. america's comedy writers should give him a standing ovation when he leaves.

Cause really, nothing says "Sorry I got you into an illegal, unjust, unjustified war" like giving up golf.

Please, can it be January yet?

Apparently a few readers were enthralled by Kerry's windsurfing prowess.
05.14.2008 | Unregistered CommenterNRH
Yes, because windsurfing determines one's ability to be president. I'd take a windsurfer over a corrupt liar any day of the week.

As usual he has it exactly ass-backwards. I think a mom whose son died would have preferred it if he had given up being commander-in-chief in 2003, and spent all his time on the golf course instead.

Holy Jeebus! The GOP really is toast. How else to explain such comments on a golf blog? All I can say is: Yea, us!
Counting the days until that a-hole is out of office.

Are you denying that he'd have been ripped for golfing while there's a war on? I can see his thinking on this, especially the way certain CEOs were ripped for golfing during business crises. Then again, I don't come from the position that he is EvilĀ®, and therefore EVERYTHING he says is stupid.

"we got the message and will be sending one right back to you in november!"

What? Is he on the ballot again? Weird. And I thought that Mission Accomplished thing happened before the 2004 election, too.

I'm counting the days until Torrey Pines. Can't wait for that 18th hole drama.

This really is a lefty golf blog. Cry about Bush. Cry about the golf ball. Cry about a links golfer not being able to compete. Cry about having to add length. Cry about the cost of golf. Cry about Augusta National. Stop crying, take your persimmons and butter knife blades and get out to your local muni that has not been watered since 1912. Make sure to use your gutta percha because it is pure and makes the game more enjoyable. After the round you can talk about how great things were during the Carter administration.

If the Democrats could nominate a remotely electable candidate, GW would have served exactly zero terms in office. Seeing as though you're about to go 0-for your last three, I'll guess we'll see you at McCain's inaugural celebration in January. Laugh it up now, you know you're going to lose...again.
05.14.2008 | Unregistered CommenterJack
Well, Jack, Gore actually did beat Bush by more than 500,000 votes. He lost his match with the Supreme Court 5 and 4. We have been paying for that for more than seven years now.
He would make a terrible criminal defendant. It is the little lies that get you. Two months after his supposed last round in August he commented to the AP about a Columbus Day round at the Andrews AFB course.

Hey cgar,? I bet you think global warming and melting polar ice caps are a lie being perpetuated by a lefty/commie/socialist/liberal conspiracy that is responsible for everything wrong with the United States.
