Monty Wants Crackdown On Slow Play

monty_look_832763.jpgFrom an unbylined golf365.com story:
"Five hours is an hour too long. There's no reason why we can't get round any course anywhere in the world in any conditions in four.

"The deterrents have got to be tougher - that works in any walk of life. If there is a serious one it's amazing how quick it could be.

"I think we are all working together on it and it's a matter of trying to get it all together and try to make it fair for everybody."

It was only two weeks that Montgomerie was on the same subject and he commented then: "I'm a quick player and there's no doubt that the slow play of others has hurt me over the years."

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the slow play of others has had a negative impact on CM's play -- he has shown, throughout the years, that outside influences negatively affect his play.

That's not a defense of slow play or a defense of the way that spectators have treated CM. It is, I believe, a fair comment on his lack of 'mental toughness.'

Yeah, Colin can get distracted by the flap of butterfly wings in the meadow next door or the players on the tee across the lake, but slow play is an entirely different matter that affects the game at every level. I have no doubt that the Larry, Moe, and Curly (my apologies to the Three Stooges) who played in front of me last week, in two carts, thought they were just playing like the guys on TV. Despite the fact that not one of them came close to breaking 100. Slow play is a scourge that needs to be rooted out at the top levels first. All it will take is a bunch of unannounced 2-stroke penalties over the course of a couple of weeks and those guys will be channeling Lanny Wadkins in no time. Some of them may even start winning once in a while. Nah. But they will improve the game for all of us.
Played yesterday and left after seven holes because it had already taken over two hours. (And it wasn't even a long track.) On the seventh, a short par 4, nobody in the group in front had teed off when we arrived. Which was odd given that the group in front of them was on the green. Apparently, one of their number thought they "might" drive the green. But that didn't explain why the other three hadn't teed off. And when they all did it was a fright show of slice, slice, and slice. The guy who thought he could drive the green wasn't much better: he produce a longer slice than the others. But nowhere near the green.

And we wonder why participation is dropping.

Monty has always seemed a little, thin-skinned, but maybe the slow-play thing really does explain his behavior. Becuase I can tell you that I was ready to fight with the people in front of me yesterday. And I'm not a violent person

I can honestly say that I have never played a par-4 where I would have been angry if the group behind had a guy who hit into me from the tee when I was on the green, including at Jackson Park where there are at least two readily drivable par-4s. If they hit and yell, it's all good. Congratulations if you're good enough to hit one 285 straight.

Slow play sucks. It's just not fun. Mrs. Doubtfire has probably the largest set of rabbit ears on the planet, but in this instance he is unquestionably correct.

Mark:

C'mon, man... When a guy knows he can drive the green ... And he goes ahead and does it anyway, that's just dangerous.

Kennedy and I took a lot of heat for that Reverse Jans thing a few years ago because people thought we were playing dangerously. In fact, we were forecaddying each other to make sure there was zero possibility of hitting anyone or anything.

At the King's Putter in Monteray, the group behind us lobbed a few missiles into us on a 265 yard par 4. I was PO'd because I KNEW the guys who did it KNEW they were long enough to do it -- but they went ahead and did it anyway.

That's BS in my book. (And the guys who did it should know exactly what I'm talking about...).

You have to lay off if there are people WHERE YOU ARE AIMING and you know you can reach them on the fly...
