Faldo Will Consider Monty For Captain's Pick If Seve And Sam Torrance Aren't Available

Lewine Mair shares Captain Faldo's lukewarm comments.

Yesterday, though, Faldo indicated that Montgomerie is still very much in his thoughts despite languishing at 90th in the world rankings. "I believe Monty will turn it round," the captain said. "He has a great way of producing the goods when it's really needed - and in theory, a player of his ability has enough time to make it happen."
And...
Later, he added that he might well ask his some of his more senior players to voice their opinions on his picks - and that is something which could definitely work in Montgomerie's favour.

Dear Nick,

Please pick Monty. We will be glad to have the free points picking Monty will give us.

Sincerely,

The Americans

Monty is done, over, kaput...like a football player who doesn't realize his time is done and shows up at camp only to last until the last round of cuts if he doesn't gracefully retire within the first two weeks. He is unlikely to move any higher than his current ranking. The guy was good, but never a true champion. Couldn't cut it in the majors and he specializes in whining and complaining and has a habit of choking when playing against the best in the world. The Americans should be quite pleased at the prospect of Nicky picking Monty.

i'm not a monty fan (and apparently neither is faldo), but give the guy his due. with his singles record in rc matches, it's a bit much to say he has a habit of choking when playing against the best in the world.

thugsone, perhaps I was a touch harsh, but Monty's whining and complaining has become too much for a guy who has never won one of the big ones or anything else recently. RC performance? Dramatically better than regular tournament play, but we all know match pay is a totally different animal than medal play. It;s like comparing apples to oranges.

michael: i agree completely about monty's whining and shooting off his mouth. the guy is insufferable. i agree with you that monty's time has most likely passed, and i also agree that match and medal are very different animals.

it's a little disorienting to find myself defending mrs. doubtfire, of all people. but monty has gone head to head in matches with the best we americans have and has come out on top every time. that counts for something in my book.

If it comes down to these three guys - Clarke, Monty and Olazabal for 2 captains picks, who does Faldo leave out?

Also what the hell happened to David Howell? He was on the verge of becoming a top 10 player, he has really fallen off.

He can't be any worse than Curtis Strange.

Seems to me that no matter how badly Monty is playing at the time (or any Euro for that matter) he will easily whip any of our guys.

Unfortunately, Olazabal's health will probably preclude the great man from being on the European squad. He has been battling rheumatism. His cut streak at Wentworth is in jeopardy.

chema: that truly is a shame. i have always thought olazabal was underappreciated. i enjoy watching him play, even when he is beating my guys in the rc.

Jose Maria Olazabal for long one of the absolute best players in the world - even physically diminished he is a class act & great champion.

Yeah most people hate Monty, and he doesn't do much to change their opinion. But reports of his death are premature; in RC I'd like his chances against any US team player except Tiger.
