"Mickelson says game in shape to add second 'fifth major'"

Sorry, I know I said the fifth major watch was over. But I just had to document that headline from the USA Today.

During the discussions here after the Masters several of us predicted the Players-as-a-major talk would be strong this year, and why not? With the Masters becoming a limited-field US Open played on an enervated course, why shouldn't the Players start to gain stature, particularly this year?

mickelson's annointing of the players as the 5th major is a lot like hillary's concern for the rights of the poor disenfranchised primary voters in michigan and florida -- self-serving. i can't help but wonder if phil would feel the same way about it if he was not reigning players champ.

Tiger winning the US Amateur in 1995 at TPC at Sawgrass, one could argue, was a major.

Tiger winning the Players Championship at TPC at Sawgrass in 2001 was NOT a major.

The Players will never be a major. There is never going to be 5 recognized professional majors - this isn't like the Champions Tour where they can just make up majors. And there is a 0% chance one of the current majors will be demoted.
