Women's Open Beats Buick

It was a showdown for the ages...from Thomas Bonk's online column:

The overnight rating for Kenny Perry's victory in Sunday's final round of the Buick Open on CBS was 1.5, down 12% from a 1.7 rating in 2007, when Brian Bateman won. The final round Sunday of the U.S. Women's Open on NBC had an overnight rating of 1.6.

"wasn't the lead-in wimbledon ?"

Yes, and because of that the leaders on Saturday and Sunday were on the 7th or 8th hole when coverage started. And if I remember correctly, NBC ended coverage on Saturday promptly at 5 PM CDT despite the fact that several groups were still on the course. The final hour or so of coverage was shown on ESPN2.

greg,

could anyone reasonably explain why sports coverages are so disjointed except for the benefit of spreading the advertising wealth and promotional lead-ins among the network and cable carriers ?

i'll say one thing, the MASTERS idea of coverage is far and away superior to any other sporting event i know of and in my mind is the main reason it is held above all other events in stature by the viewing public at large. the minute they split or chop-up that coverage it will be just another golf tournament.

you would think they learned from the heidi bowl - but marketing promotion and advertising bucks rule.

Wow, these viewer ratings are really bad! The US Women's Open ranks behind 3 or 4 "Silly Season" events in ratings. How is this possible? Same is true for the Buick Open!!!
