"Par at 70 is slightly ridiculous but that is the modern trend, knock a couple strokes off so nobody makes our course look foolish. And nobody has." **

Ah, I like sleeping in and leaving the live blogging to Van Sickle and Shipnuck. Here I was about to transcribe Peter Alliss' little rant about par-70s and they already have it up...

11:15: TNT is pretty much proving that eight hours of golf coverage is way too much. Paul Azinger provided some spark, and so did venerable Peter Alliss when he signed on after 11. Azinger and Alliss make a difference because they actually have things to say. Allis came on the air and immediately said, "Par at 70 is slightly ridiculous but that is the modern trend, knock a couple strokes off so nobody makes our course look foolish. And nobody has." Alliss is a gem.

Allis is definitely a gem.

One time during a U.S. Open telecast of long ago the camera panned to the writer's center and focused on two scribes working away. Allis slowly said three words...

"English, Yiddish, Rubbish"

Always liked that remark, but certainly no offense intended towards you, Geoff.

Bill Parcells thinks your "no offense" is offensive.

Im lucky enough to be able to watch the BBC feed as well.. you know whats its like to see no commercials, no Lexus BS halftimeshow, no recap of Fisnchs win?? Its amazing.

I dont understand how american viewers can put up with such substandard coverage.

Huh: It's because we don't have the BBC feed. How do you get it (assuming you're in the U.S.)?

huh...1. The BBC can't even follow a ball in flight. 2. Peter Alliss is completely out of touch with today's players. 3. While TNT could use some spiffing up, let's remember that 80 or 90% of the shots are provided by the "beeb". 4. American bashing is so easy, but not always fair. 5. Give me CBS' coverage of The Masters anytime.

1. I watched bbc via broadband/slingbox (legally) and I had no problems following the flight of the ball.

2. Aliss is better than Tirico/Zinger/Ian? Joking right? Im sure you also prefer Kelly and Nick?

3) Indeed true, TNT/ABC have their own "blimp" camera (maybe to fix the perception of #1?) and thats it.

4) Sorry, I guess this always comes up with bbc vs tnt/espn debate.

5) Definitely true, but thats proving my point, golf is *so* much better when you see GOLF. Not stupid 30 minute blurbs about Ians last win or Lexus halftime stuff. Unless Americans want that. <shrug?> I am not American fr the record.

And the reason I brought it up, is that my out of america cable provider is picking up the TNT feed, when they could easily pick up the BBC feed if they so choose. Hell, theres even a "international" feed which is just BBC feed but has commercial time allotments, I would gladly take that over TNT as well.

I'm in Hoylake, and the variety of opinion on the BBC is what makes it. Yes you get 11 hours of coverage a day, and the ball in the air can't be followed very well, because the cameras are half a mile away on mega-zoom, but Mark James and Wayne O'Grady are very sharp with their criticism, and the rotating commentators ensures entertainment. Also, they even do golf on the radio over here BBC 5 Live - even more entertaining, considering you can't see diddly. But the TV here gives a choice of five different views at any one time, so watch the 17th, or follow Ernie, or regular coverage, or highlights or whatever.

I had trouble following the ball when TNT flashed their incessant "THE CLOSER" promo.

golfman = b. clampett?

Just kidding, but seriously, it takes guts to stand up for any of the American coverage. And to drop the sticky, dripping, sappy, milquetoast Masters coverage as the shining example of them all? Yikes.

As I said yesterday...Peter Alliss knows very little of today's players. He is going on and on about what could have happened to David Duval's game. If he did his homework, he would know that Duval's downfall started by trying to play through an injury. Instead all we get is conjecture. A tournament of this stature deserves better than just an accent. And no...i'm not Clampett!
