The Making Of The Horse Course, Volume 1

Now that we have a week off from the playoff excitement, I have posted my first 4-minute "video diary" from the site of a golf course project. In this case, it's Volume 1 from the Prairie Club where Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and I have layed out a par-3 course called "The Horse Course." You can read more on the Prairie Club on the page I've devoted to it (with some early construction images posted), or at the Destination Golf Ventures website.

Volume 1 centers around our trip (Gil, Jimand yours truly) to work with developer Paul Schock and his team on the clubhouse area land plan. You can view a slightly wider angle version here or hit the play button on the embedded version below.

And as you will soon see, I'm no Steven Spielberg in the editing bay and certainly no Morgan Freeman in the voiceover booth. But hopefully you'll enjoy the images and great music, which in this case appears courtesy of Lloyd Cole from his excellent album, Antidepressant.

Geoff,
Is this an imovie made film? Congrats, it's very cool. Great quality images and I already downloaded the Cole song, it's awesome set against those images of the heartland.

Thanks so much. My children thank you for their dinner.

Man, if that's the real Lloyd Cole above, that's pretty sweet. I just wish Sean Penn Blues was on the 1984-1989 CD.

Yes, that is the real Lloyd Cole. A fine music talent for the current generation.
From the sound on the video it would appear that the entry road may end up being called "The Long and Winding Road."
Hey I was walking my bag...

geoff,

can you give some background on why Gil decided to proceed with the "horse course" after having been turned away from either of the big courses?

curious more than anything.

Phil,
Because I talked him into it!

It's a long story, but essentially we have always felt strongly about two things related to the Prairie Club: the remarkable nature of the site we've routed a course on, and the importance of having a par-3 that is a fun place to enjoy the beautiful evenings (or to start your day). In talking to Paul Schock, we realized by doing the par-3 we'd be able to be involved in the clubhouse planning and to do something pretty unusual with the course. He encouraged us to try something different, and hopefully I'll be able to show in these videos that we've done something unique. And of course, we've laid the groundwork to eventually do the third course there when it happens, so for us it's turned out to be a great experience at a place we really love.

I definitely caught that comment on the video, that your original course (Caprock) is still possible to be built. I guess I assumed that either Marsh or Lehman (or both) had gotten to design their courses over that same land.
No their courses were purposely routed to stay off the Caprock course land.

The choice of Lloyd's Traveling Light was a wise one, but hopefully, sometime soon there will be another video made especially for Paul Shock, detailing of how a Marsh Course and a Lehman Course got built before the Cap Rock Course; thus enabling the use of Lloyd's more then apropos song, "How Wrong Can You Be?"

Great music Lloyd. Can hardly wait for the next Lloyd siting!
