Jordan Crashes Presidents Cup Team Picture!

Or at least it looks that way...

But seriously, about that drama, that strategy and all of the second guessing taking place today? I mean it's one thing to walk an All-Star to get a Hall of Famer but Terry Francona...oh, sorry, wrong Sunday drama.

I didn't watch much and I know a lot of you enjoyed watching the world's best tackle that insipid bunkering and drama-free design, so I'll just leave it to the SI guys to actually agree with the PGA Tour brass who were trying to keep Michael Jordan away from official Presidents Cup events:

Gorant: Michael Jordan as an assistant captain also made an impression. It was both cool and ridiculous, and you'd never see that at the Ryder Cup. That says everything about why the Presidents Cup is both better and worse.

Shipnuck: Barf. Jordan was a circus sideshow, nothing more.

Van Sickle: Couldn't agree more, Alan. Honestly, what's this guy really doing hanging around with pros? Get a day job.

Lipsey: He has a day job: counting money, smoking cigars, chillin' in Vegas and playing golf with Tiger and his pals.

Where was Robin Williams? Freddie was definitely thinking 'outside' ANY box we are aware of.

Where does Rick Lipsey's bitterness come from? Rick, if you could, would you not count your money, play golf with Tiger and do anything else you felt like doing that day? If you say no, you are a liar...

Presidents Cup was a joke. Couples was borderline at best. Thank god he wasn't needed for anything. Michael Jordan? What was he doing there? Why not have Bill Murray captain the next team and lets have it as a side event to the AT&T National Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Then we can add it to the list of golf's most embarrassing moments.

The Olympics and golf? Another embarrassing joke.

What's next? Pamela Anderson as the official spokesperson for the PGA Tour?

If I see another bleach blond Tour wife I think I will throw up.

What is happening to golf?
What is the problem with Captain Couples wanting and inviting Michael Jordan to be part of his team of advisors? . . . Sports Illustrated has a long and well known animus with MJ dating back to their ridicule of him for honoring his Father by trying to play professional baseball. . . The Tour created this event because it was jealous of the income derived by the PGA of America with its Ryder Cup. Evidently the Tour is unhappy about the "image" of Michael Jordan being part of this year's fund raiser. . . I will not try and guess why. . . It does seem clear that the next Captain will be given guidelines (maybe even a list of names) regarding his advisory choices. . .
It might be fun to try and guess the names on that list of "qualified motivators"? . . . Limbaugh; Dr. Phil; Parcells; Judge Judy; Dick Cheney??

Wisconsin Reader, Your last sentence or two wraps it up. Fun, huh?

Plenty is wrong with it. It becomes a circus with a sideshow.
Mr. Incorrect...

I am pretty new to the game and I am intrigued by your comments. In all sincerity, could you outline some of the issues/problems with golf as you see it and also add in some things you would like to see take place. And yes, I am serious and not antagonizing you or setting you up for some kind of slam or comeback. I am 100% interested in what you have to say.

Like I say, I am new to the game...been playing 2 years...and I love it...and would like to see it continue to thrive. However, I see a lot of people complain about the current state of the game...but they never offer ideas or solutions. So, along those lines I would love to hear your ideas regarding better the game, the Tour, the tournaments, etc.

Thanks in advance.

A sideshow? To what? Golf is a sideshow, is it not? The President's Cup and/or Ryder Cup are not exactly serious affairs...are they?

Mr. Incorrect . . .
Events like this are a circus . . . They need sideshows. . . Or do you somehow buy into the patriotic angle? . . . The U.S. against "them" . . . Our guys who have houses in Florida versus their guys who have houses in Florida. . . It is an exhibition featuring - sometimes - some top ten ranked players making money for the PGA Tour to help guarantee their pension plan continues being the most wonderful and amazing in the history of the world. . . Plus they - and their wives - get some amazing color coordinated outfits they can wear once and then donate to the Orlando Goodwill store. . . I record and watch this event - and the Ryder Cup - to see golf shots played by great players - not because I particularly care which Florida based team wins. . . They should drop the whole United States versus the "not United States" angle entirely. . . How about the Fed Ex Exceptionals versus the Dubai Dudes? . . . Top 12 on each final list meet - at the new Trump TPC International in Rio - with the remaining TARP money and free lifetime private jet fuel going to the winners?

Wisconsin, mrpgolf, you guys are not wrong. It just aggravates me to see it turned into a circus. It's like (pardon my english) why isn't great golf enough? Why do we need a sideshow? Do you want golf or do you want sideshows? Go to the circus if you want sideshows. What did Michael Jordan really contribute? Then how about the hypocritical PGA Tour? Jordan is okay with them, but then they bar him from the opening ceremonies? Can you imagine if Robin Williams had been included?

I detest the part of our culture that worships so-called celebs. Then you throw TV into the mix and you get something that at times seems like it would be better placed being broadcast by Entertainment Tonight.
Wisconsin Reader...

AWESOME ending!!!!

In all seriousness, Fed Ex Top 12 vs. Race for Dubai Top 12 would be really fun to watch. Which Tour is better...not the FLA vs. FLA matches that you say. However, we would have to deal with the few players that overlap both events.

And to boot, your ideas of playing in Rio...very funny!!!

Later!

Ever notice how Tiger is always on the periphery of the team photos?

Good job Lipsey !! Not bad Garant. Shipnuck and Van Sickle - you just proved why you're not really needed in the golf community.

Barf...to Michael Jordan ? Are you insane ? One of the all time greatest winners in sports and you barf on him ? You're nuts. TIger has to play. Tiger is also not going to be a best bud to the rest of the team because he is going to eat these guys alive next season. MJ is beloved around the world and he is a winner of the highest level. The rest of the team could pick his brain if they wanted and maybe pick up some mental toughness to stand up to Tiger in the future.

What's wrong with the relaxed atmosphere ? Not a thing. The Ryder Cup was this way before the media got ahold of it and chummed the waters to get people riled up and build an artificial "hatred" between US and Euro fans. From there, these drunken nits moved to places like Bethpage Black with their foul language and abuses spewed from the galleries.

A circus atmosphere ? What Presidents Cup were you watching ? Jordan did nothing to distract from the play. He was in the background as much as possible. Even the TV broadcasts only went to him for a few seconds here and there. There was no media fawning over him every step he took.

Vince - I think Robin Williams would be better at the Ryder Cup - his Scottish golf routine fits better there than with the international team. (lol)

Jordan had been a regular inside the ropes at the Ryder Cup for years. Freddie just gave it a bit more formality, but the difference really isn't much.

2006 Ryder Cup webpage: He is considered one of the greatest to ever play his sport, and certainly one of the most clutch performers. And he was standing around the tee box at The K Club, never too far from Jim Furyk. Michael Jordan is becoming a regular visitor at the Ryder Cup. Jordan, allowed inside the ropes with a TV pass, picked up Woods as his morning fourball match made the turn.

Why all of a sudden is this an issue in 2009?

"Michael Jordan as assistant captain" is a lot less ridiculous than "players' wives' team uniforms."

I like that Jordan was on hand to help motivate!! Millionaires helping Billionaires! Yippee. May I suggest next time Alice Cooper or Lewis Black. And Lloyd Cole for the nightly entertainment.

Chuck is right. The wife thing was beyond belief. I bet the jokes in the media center were juicy. What about it Geoff?
"If I see another bleach blond Tour wife I think I will throw up.

What is happening to golf?"

Sounds like you have some non-golf related issues. Seriously, if what you are looking for is "great golf", why on earth would you care one way or the other what color the players' wives hair is?

Sorry, that's just a weird comment.

Well, I guess I will defend the Michael Jordan choice. He and NBC decided that he was helping Sean O'Hair for the week. Jordan was working on his confidence. Maybe, maybe not. But can anyone deny that with his background, it is possible Sean could use a little vote of confidence? I watched in person Michelson/O'Hair a lot on Saturday. Michelson was wearing out Sean's ears with talk, advice and thoughts the whole day. As Miller on TV said, Tiger giving a tip to Sean on putting, Jordan on confidence and Michelson on golf strategy, not a bad month for Sean.
If anyone out there doesn't think Jordan could give some advice on winning, you are naive. He was a killer on the court, if any of that swagger rubs off great. If you want to be negative, all I saw Freddie do was ride around in a cart, talk to the wives and a few other friends. I too think this was brilliant. As a player with his personality, he realizes about all he could do was screw things up.
When asked who were the toughest coaches he faced, John Wooden would reply, "the ones with the best players." Captains or coaches can only do so much, a little coaching on the side like Jordan did might be the best route to take in this kind of event.
Is it just an exhibition yes, is the wife thing corny, yes, but it is fun to watch these guys grinding against one another because of pride.

Greatest individual player ever in a team sport is asked to be an Assistant Captain of an individual sport team event. Who would not listen to Michael Jordan? How many swing coaches can swing like Phil and Tiger, yet they get hired every day.

Does anyone not understand that Jordan knows how to win and by the way, his team did win. Nice work Freddy.
10.12.2009 | Unregistered CommenterPat Melvin
Fred Couples gets it. set it up so players have fun and then stay out of the way. Figure out who Tiger wants to play with ahd set it up-again and again. Tiger likes MJ (who, exceot for Van Sickel and Shipnuck dont?) so MJ is asst. captain. Pavin quit his college team-maybe Freddie would be a better Ryder Cup pick...

Meanwhile Montgomerie is insulting likely players on his team (Poulter) lookin good for the US...
