“While I feel like the comments published were taken out of context..." **

This PGA Tour-issued Robert Allenby statement hasn't been sitting too well since he's essentially claiming he was misquoted. Since this release is coming from PGA Tour headquarters, they are indirectly endorsing the implication that the golf media in some way stretched the truth. However, after a little research I've learned from those present that the comments were documented by four reporters, one who confirmed that he has the conversation on tape.

To review, here's what Allenby's statement said:

“While I feel like the comments published were taken out of context, I did call Anthony to apologize for anything that I said or inferred that could possibly portray Anthony as anything less than a professional of the highest caliber.”

In the original Golfweek report and in another story by Andrew Both, it is reported that Allenby was "asked if his comments were on the record," to which Allenby said, “I don’t care. Ask his playing partners. Ask his team. He is the loosest cannon in that team.”

I know that doesn't clear up the context issue entirely, but it does establish that he was not quoted in an off-the-record moment. And it's highly unusual, downright kind even for a reporter to offer a subject a chance to retract his remarks.

Now, here's the quote that got Allenby in trouble, again from Golfweek:

“Maybe we should all take the theory of Anthony Kim,” Allenby said. “Get home at 4 o’clock (in the morning) and then go shoot 6 under.”

Both wrote up the incident this way:

“I’m just pissed off that I lost,” Allenby said in a joking manner.

“Maybe I should have the attitude of Anthony Kim, get home at 4am and go play. Maybe I should have gone out with him.”

Allenby was asked how he knew that Kim had been out until 4am, less than six hours before their tee time.

He said some friends who had seen the American come in late.

Granted, these are not perfectly matching quotes, but it's hard to see how the context was skewed unless Allenby's friends got the day wrong (Kim did sit out Saturday morning's matches). In Both's case, he made it  clear there was a jokey tone to Allenby's comments, but ultimately Allenby was sharing the anecdote because he believed it was true.

Now, in the big scheme of life this is an entirely meaningless episode unless Kim goes on to have an alcohol-related incident which ends up hurting someone else.

The real lesson here is the decision by Allenby to blame the media and the PGA Tour to go to the trouble to issue a release.  Thomas Bonk notes the oddball reaction by the tour and the reasons why they went into damage control.

Instead of just letting this die, as I suspect it would have without today's statements, the Tour saw fit to step in and no so subtly allow the suggestion that the messenger was in some way to blame here. There should have been a private apology and nothing more. Issuing a press release and relying on the lame "out of context" excuse reminds us how reckless Allenby's remarks were, how desperate the tour is to stay clear of controversy and how far it will go to protect it's young, up-and-coming "product," even if it's at the expense of the media.

...it also shows us what a complete twat Robert Allenby is.

What would have gone away now needs to be investigated if they tour feels the need to launch a coordinated spin campaign. At least, that's what the conspiracy theorist in me says.

Kim is reckless and will hurt someone with is behavior if he doesn't tone it down. The tour may regret having tried to sweep his behavior under the rug.

Tim, do you know Robert Allenby? Have you ever spoken with him, or spent any time with him??

Yes or no...

I have not - but know several people who have. I'm yet to hear a good word about him (save for his excellent charity work, which is to be commended).

So, what are the odds that Allenby and Kim will have a re-match at the World Matchplay Championship in Spain at the end of the month?

10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterPickworth
does staying out until 4 a.m. the night before a match automatically equal an "alcohol related incident?"
10.15.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
We live in such a vanilla world, occasionally someone perks it up with the truth. and then they get crushed. from what has been reported it seems pretty clear that anthony kim has some form, a controversial reputation, even among peers, and had a late night. robert allenby was undiplomatic to be so direct, but we are all the richer for it. it is a shame he lacked the guts to stick to his guns, but you would not be surprised if he was pressurised by the tour to apologise. i have no brief for robert allenby but i certainly support people who have some views to offer.

I have stayed out to 4 a.m. when I wasn't drinking. Yeah, right...

Shut up, Robert. It's match play, pal. If you cry every time you lose, you cry buckets...

I'm reminded of Walter Hagen, who once was "excoriated" for being out on the town the night before an important match. He allowed as how his opponent might have been in bed early, but he wasn't sleeping. On second thought, never mind. Kim and Allenby should never be thought of in the context of Walter Hagen, he of the 5 PGA Championships, 4 British Opens, and 2 US Opens. My bad. Need coffee.
I don't even think most people who claims that quotes are "taken out of context" know what that means. I think it's athelete/celebrity shorthand for "I wish i didn't say it".

In what context could the quote have meant something else?
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterKeithT
Exactly, Keith. Just once I'd like to see that phrase used correctly:

"No, what I said was, so this guy comes up to me and he's a total jerk and a moron and he says to me, maybe we should all take the theory of Anthony Kim. Get home at 4 o'clock (in the morning) and then go shoot 6 under. And I says to the guy, I says, you're a jerk and a moron. Anthony Kim is the greatest guy in the whole world. See? I was 'taken out of context.'"

That's never how it goes, though.

"Kim is reckless and will hurt someone with is behavior if he doesn't tone it down." Staying out late is "reckless"? Obviously, you're privy to info the rest of us don't have.

I'm in PR. I don't know what's worse:

1] That organziations put out these silly statement/apologies. Everyone realizes they're fabricated by PR people or agents. They make the organization look silly and draw more attention!

2] Media continue to use these statements as if they're real. Wouldn't this have been better if no media would have published this? I wish media would just publish blatent plugs for my clients, but they don't "because they're not in the business of promoting my product." Then why do they publish these fabricated statements?

Can anyone elaborate on the other rumors about Kim for the week...

Specifically that he was supposedly asked to leave a team meeting by Couples.

Something is not right here with these stories...
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterKevin
AK is young and likes to enjoy his youth. Kevin, what's not right?
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterArdmore Ari
if it did happen, i'd like to know why ak was asked to leave the team room.
10.15.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
What I meant by saying "something is not right" is that it is strange that an unamed player of the US team would make that statement about Kim being asked to leave a meeting, and then Kim denies it as does Couples.
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterKevin
Sorry, I'm with PTL on this one. . . who friggin cares? AK came in buzzed at 4 a.m. and then went out and drubbed Allenby, who says/implies/infers he's a loose cannon. While I'm not sure why Robert felt the need to make those comments, does anyone out there think that Nike's gonna pull AK's sponsorship bucks because this 24 year old mega-millionaire likes to spend those $$ with his friends? Has the partying been the cause of what even AK would admit has been a down year? I've read about a number of injuries that he's been suffering from. Anybody out there have any knowledge -- not rank speculation, rumor, or gossip, but some facts -- that it's all a lie, and that the real reason AK hasn't built off his Ryder Cup success is because of his lifestyle? Anyone with that kind of factual information???? I didn't think so.

Can't we all just get excited about the Fall Series???
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterSmolmania
Interviewer: "So why did you stay out partying til 4am?"

AK: "It's just the President's Cup, and it's just Robert Allenby."

Again we must ask ourselves: "So what?"
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterRM
Geoff in the original story of this non story AK denied being out Saturday night. Seems like thats a denial to me even if it wasn't in the press releases that AK and Allenby actually didn't write. Maybe VanSickle missed that?
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterOWGR Fan
What is the issue here? So frickin what if Allenby said he was out until 4.Was he? ANd so frickin what if he was. AK did his "job" and won. Good grief what a bunch of girls. And that includes the PGA. I do get a chuckle out of it. Its so absurd. Millionaires and cry babies don't make a good match.
10.15.2009 | Unregistered Commentervwgolfer
At 24, you can still be out til 4 am and pissing it up, good clean fun. When you near 30, it is much harder. I've only made it home after sunrise twice since the first Little Tighthead was born.

The real story here is the asked to leave the team room thing.

"When it's third and ten, you can take the milk drinkers and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time".
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
ok, so how 'bout one of these golf "reporters" start asking around and find out waht actually happened....
10.15.2009 | Unregistered Commentersmails
OWGR - good catch, someone else emailed to note the same thing. Will note that with GVanSick's tweet.
10.15.2009 | Registered CommenterGeoff
What is VanSickle talking about? When asked in the parking lot about the comments shortly there after, Kim was clearly on record saying the accusation was quote "totally false" and when on to say he hoped Allenby joking.
10.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterDyslecix
Geoff, the ESPN article you linked yesterday quotes Couples as saying that Kim was not out late ANY night:

"I can promise you that he was not out any night, let alone Saturday night," Couples told KJR.

In some respects, this issue may be more about the rest of the PGA tour than it is about Anthony Kim. Twenty years or so ago, many of the players would actually go out to public establishments and (horrors) actually consume alcoholic beverages and (more horrors still) interact with the hoi polloi. Nowadays, these robotic check chasers will wash down their dinner with a diet Coke (caffeine free, natch) and head back to the suite at the Ritz for some late night Pilates before dozing off to the Spa Channel on their satellite radio.

Yawn.

They're a bunch of boring bastards, you ask me. All of the holy rollers can rush to condemn Kim for being a boozer, but he ain't a loser. He pounded the humorless Allenby. Good for him.
