No Injuries Reported When Tiger's Two-Handed Tomahawk Driver Fling Lands In Australian Gallery

You can view a golf.com gallery with the embarrassing retrieval.

(I guess it would have been a little tacky to send Stevie after it like last time)

From YouTube:

Angus Morgan explains what happened:

Woods played down an incident on the 13th tee where his driver ended up in the gallery after a wayward drive.

"I was spinning the ball quite a bit with the driver today and I didn't quite have it right," he said.

"On 13 it was my mistake there, I got hot after a bad tee shot and let go of the club."

I enjoyed this fan shot from the day before more. Notice how as Tiger stops mid-swing the Zapruder drops his camera just in case those eyes on the back of Tiger's head spotted the dude capturing this historic shot. Sheesh, he's not Monty!

I love it when Tiger get the driver back, and then looks at the face to see if its bent-ha ha.

Throwing clubs at the crowd, only Tiger can get away with this !

Wow - I wonder what The Tour is going to do about this kind of thing. This is twice in the last few months that he has let fly with a club. This one could've caused some injuries. He's lucky not to have done that in the States - someone would've had a lawyer on the phone by the time he got to the green.

Someone needs to talk to Tiger - fine him - something.

court:

A fine isn't going to mean anything to Woods, no matter if it was $1million. Now an immediate DQ might just get his attention, and perhaps motivate him to think and do something about his anger management problem.

I finally have something in common with Tiger- from about 20 years ago.
When I was 16.
It's Okay though, I still remember all those times when Jack, Tom, Arnie, Lee were flinging clubs near spectators.
Player actually killed a guy with a 3 Wood but it was hushed up.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered Commenterjjshaka
He barely threw that thing. I've seen much harder throws. I guess these new clubs really do go further...
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe O
jjshaka - you're joking right? Are there any PGA or R&A rules about abhorrent behaviour regarding clubs, or is it considered beneath them to specify penalty direction for such a specific temper tantrum occurence?

"I was spinning the ball quite a bit...."

Whoever refers to a hook or slice as "spinning the ball"?

King dork himself a.k.a Eldrick Woods, that's who.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterJPB
It would have been great if the crowd had just passed the club off the course.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterAverage Golfer
I don't remember Tiger throwing clubs and as many outbursts, cussing and tantrums like he has now when he winning majors all the time. There is more to these "dummy spits" than just a bad shot. It has to be a long and deep frustration with his flawed swing so he can't win majors and it drives him nuts! He can't get the job done any more like he use too and other players know it! 2010 will be a great acid test, if he cant win 2 or 3 majors given the venues then his swing is toast and so will Hank!
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterJT
not to go all Dr. Phil, but it's like "Dude, why so angry?"
everyone who tries to hit a golf ball gets frustrated, but Tiger is so freakin' bitter out there
Unacceptable, but....he's Tiger. too much money for too many people for there to be any ramifications that will deter his increased outbursts. Which is a horrible justification.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered Commenterjeff
I am routinely defending Tiger, with all of the hyper-technical, high-definition scrutiny that he gets. This one was not good. It was weird; that was freak bounce that the driver took. But does anybody remember any equivalent by Nicklaus? Watson? Trevino? Did the notoriously ill-tempered Tom Weiskopf ever have a similar incident? Tiger's no Tommy Bolt, but he needs to re-think after this incident.

(Jack of course nearly clobbered Doug Sanders with his putter celebrating his first Open win at St. Andrews.)

I liked Lee Trevino's basic-level question about Tiger; Why can't he drive the ball straight? There's no reason why the world's best golfer, with such a solid swing and with his exemplary focus and discipline, should be so wild with driver.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterChuck
Take this from someone who had a Tour level short game but eventually quit the game because he couldn't hit water from a boat with the driver:
Tiger has become a head case with the driver. He has full-blooded driver yips, and that is the simple answer to Trevino's question. What's more, he knows it, and that's the reason for the outbursts. Who gets more upset over a missed three footer - the good putter or the yipper? He half expects a high flare or a snap hook, and when one of them shows up, it's an instant emotional ketchup burst.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterHawkeye
Judging by that gallery, I'd say that appearance fee was money well spent.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterLip Out
Hawkeye - Hank Haney said he had the driver yips for 10+ years. I guess Tiger didn't get vaccinated.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
I once staunchly defended his rants and his right to rant.

I withdraw my defense.

Grow up, Tiger...
11.14.2009 | Unregistered CommenterVince Spence
he may have a right to rant, but i'm pretty sure he doesn't have the right to throw clubs into the gallery.

this kind of thing is just embarrassing. he didn't even look particularly apologetic about it when he retrieved the club -- not even a signed glove or whatever he normally gives to a spectator beaned by one of his errant tee shots.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
And look at all the dumbass lemmings applauding him as he got his driver back and walked away.
11.14.2009 | Unregistered Commenterdbcooper
I would return the club to Tiger and not expect an apology. I would break it first though.

Is he going to call me on an ettiquette breach?

dbcooper

We are all ex-convicts with a subservient attitude to authority, which may qualify us as 'dumbass lemmings', or

We were rooting for him extremely hard and I guess no-one wanted the spell to be broken by his petulance, or

He hadn't called out 'get in the hole' once, so we will forgive him anything.

Please tell the millions of dumbass lemmings on your side of the Pacific to friggin' well shut up in the gallery

Immediate DQ? The dude netted $3m just to show up no? He's got FU money, an FU wife, and that's the way it will always be. Let it go, everywhere--he's above the sport at this point.
11.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterJason
Hey dude, hate to hijack an entertaining but ultimately irrelevant comment threa here, but you may want to take off your court jester hat for a few hours later this afternoon as a tournament with something actually at stake in it goes down. Hint: Mich
OK, that hint was too short. Here's more:

elle W--

Or how about this hint?

Rhymes with GA Win, trying to make like Lopez.

Heck, with Golf Channel going all USA USA USA like it's 2016 already, you wn't even need to take your hat off.
Many of the most thoughtful Shack readers have weighed in, correctly. It's indefensible, appallingly stupid and, in fact, dangerous.

It also sets in motion the inevitable modern (media) morality play. Tiger will be forced (sooner or later) to the same conclusion. Then, how to maximize the benefit in the mea culpa/admission? An interview on 60 minutes or Oprah or face some friendly fire from an ESPN-Tiger toady. A book with several chapters dedicated to anger/emotional control with a forward by Dr. Phil. Then a $1 million donation (read: tax write-off) to Stanford/Michigan/Cal Tech where some psuedo research is being done on the glucose-testosterone temperment index. Tiger may even be diagnosed as having a physiological problem. Earl was diabetic, his sugar naturally ran high...blah, blah, blah...At the dedication/donation ceremony, Adam Sandler will be present for the photo op. We might also explore hosting Saturday Night Live -- good for all involved -- wherein Tiger plays on his now notorious temper.

Oh...one other thing. The YouTube video of the previous incident has disappeared. I could be wrong about this, but these thing can be explained easily. the broadcaster/sanctioning tour owns the rights to the footage from the competitive event. You're breakinng the rules simply by carrying a video camera o the grounds. So, with a bit of electronic forensics and some lawyer letters to YouTube, it gets taken down. For this latest incident, IMG is already making the phone calls to set the wheels in motion. The letters will follow Monday morning. File under: Under-Rug-Swept and Damage Control (above paragraph) set in motion. Also, this helps IMG justify its fees.

Why in the world would TW change? He's been spolied and coddled to his whole life. He has had everyone bending over backwards for him, walking on eggshells for fear of getting on his bad side since he's declared, "Hello world". How can this guy have perspective on anything when he's never had to come up with the goods to put food on the table or pay the mortgage? He's never had anyone call him out on the carpet for anything, so until someone does it, he'll do whatever he wants because that's what he's always done. He's still a boy in alot of respects....
11.15.2009 | Unregistered Commenterminefats
Being a perfectionist ultimately pays its price. It gets you in the head and you care too much and then golf ceases to be enjoyable -- even though he won and all that, i'm referring to the recent (post-op) behavior curve.
He seemed to be more in the zone previously, now it looks more like a cage ~ one with 14 stamped on it.
The club chuck was slashing at the bars with his claws, reprehensible yet understandable considering the focus we all have him under.
11.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterMacDuff
It's getting really hard to root for him. Put him in a final round pairing and I'd root for almost anyone in the world vs. him now.
11.15.2009 | Unregistered CommenterCBell
Well said Pickworth pleasure to watch golf without some dickwad bloke with an america accent yelling get in the hole on a tee shot on a par five.
11.15.2009 | Unregistered Commenterkeith86
Kinda of reminds me of Veruca Salt in the Willy Wonka movie. "Daddy I want a straight drive NOW!!"

Nothing more pathetic than a billionaire crying over a missed drive. Of course Kostis would say its the fiery competitor in him. BAH HUMBUG to that Crap.
