"Get ready for another Torrey Pines playoff"

Sean Martin has what may be the strangest story of the year. Or certainly the most bizarre in the world of college golf: Tim Mickelson in an 18-hole playoff with one of his USD players for a spot in the event formerly known as the Buick Invitational.

thats pretty interesting... i'm afraid ol' Tim should man up and walk away, letting his player and a young player with some obvious potential get some experience, rather than coach getting (not likely his first) MC.

TM does his player no good service by giving it to him. At least not before a playoff...

AA: Sure he does. Gives him the chance to play in a pro event and hear/see/feel what the "next level" is all about.

I don't think any self-respecting player wants it handed to them. Sure, Wiebe would love to play in the Tour event, but if Tim just rolled over and gave it to him, Wiebe would have thoughts of "Would I have beaten him in the playoff?" Such thoughts would taint his experience at the real event.

This will be a great learning experience for Wiebe either way. If he beats him, he gets the spot and proves to himself that he can perform under pressure. If he eats it in the playoff, well, it's inspiration for next year.
