L.A. Loses LPGA Event It Never Hosted To San Diego

Oh I know, it's all Southern California in some eyes, but the J Golf event was clearly announced by the Brand Lady as an LA tournament until event operators IMG apparently wised up and realized that their only option at Industry Hills would be a disaster. Obviously, they didn't take my advice about some other nice venue options.

Jon Show reports that the first J Golf Classic will be played at La Costa, and if you can't see behind the pay window like most of us, Tod Leonard shares some of the details.

La Costa is a terrible choice for a course. Most overrated course in Socal in my opinion.

Isn't the PGA Tour moving the Frys.com somewhere near or actually in Industry Hills? The Institute????

Well, "Industry Hills" is just the name of the golf courses at the Pacific Palms resort, though the whole resort used to be Industry Hills when it was a Sheraton. The city itself is just the City of Industry. And the golf courses are, well, not so great in my opinion. I haven't played the Babe in probably 15 years or so, but it was horrendously tight the last time I played it. I mean comically tight in places. I don't know what changes they've made, but I've heard it's not as bad as it used to be. The Ike is probably a better course, but it's by no means great, and nowhere near worth what they charge for it. Both are tremendously bad spectator courses. Difficult to get from one part of the course to another without walking along the routing. Very hilly and not walk-friendly. I don't think they have a grass range, but I'm sure they could do something about that for an event. At face value, the parking situation probably isn't good, but I'd imagine there's gotta be a school nearby somewhere that could use some revenue.

Geoff left it off his list, but I'm not sure why Brookside wouldn't be a good venue. Both courses are probably better than Santa Anita, and parking really wouldn't be an issue since it's right next to the Rose Bowl.

@ Seitz......

Thanks for the explanation. It does appear that the Frys.com is moving to Cordevale for next year and then possibly to the Institute at Morgan Hill some time after that. I got my information and my geography of California way crossed up.

Seitz,
Have you played Santa Anita to form that opinion?

What about the parking at the race track right directly across the street, as well as the incredible golf course that....opps! Has recently been ruined by Casey O'Callahan?

I'm very surprised that the LPGA did't look at Oakmont CC in Glendale, more seriously. It recently has undergone a dynamic remodel by Brian Curley is is three times the course it used to be.

Tom, by my back of the envelope calculation (2x per week, 14 weeks per year for the four years I was on the golf team + casual rounds), I've probably played Santa Anita about 150 times.
