It's A Stanley Thompson Course!

In this dust up over design credit for Hyde Park, I suppose I forget that it is Florida and a long way from Canada, but it's not like the design credit is going from a Donald Ross to a Leonard Thompson. Or even a Fred Thompson (same generation in his case).

Stanley Thompson was no slouch and considering how few of his courses south of the border--or even north of the border--Hyde Park still has premier architectural lineage.

Exactly. Thompson was one of the greatest archtiects of the Golden Age. In every respect on a level with Donald Ross.

Thompson just didn't do many courses in the US. Which is why Hyde Park ought to be making hay with this. Ross courses are a dime a dozen. Thompson courses in the US are rare.

Hyde Park owers should be rushing to endorse Whitten's view.

I'm a member of a Thompson course in Canada and he was a superb architect. In a listing of the top 100 courses in Canada he still has more courses to his credit than any other architect and he died more than 50 years ago! To put his career in perspective, he gave Robert Trent Jones Senior his start in the business.

A good friend of mine grew up 15 minutes from the Highlands Links, and his entire extended family played to a very high level. No shock he's a teaching pro/teaches at the PGM program at the best golf school in Atlantic Canada now. Anyway, he told me the best story I'd ever heard about a Thompson course. He didn't grow up with a lot of money, and played his first junior tournament not at the Highlands when he was 14 or 15. He travelled to one of the other courses on Cape Breton, got about halfway through his first round, and had one single thought.
