Monty Kicks Off One Of Golf's Great Traditions...

...some people look forward to the Masters, others clamor for that first spring day when they can tee it up after a long winter, while I long for the final WD count from the European U.S. Open qualifier.

Last year there were 20 who entered but pulled up lame, just four short of the 2006 record of 24. But with Monty and Marc Warren already pulling out Sunday night after rough final rounds at Wentworth, anything's possible on Monday. Gentlemen, start your cell phones!

Monty is a total pussy. Good thing he wimped out, that way we won't have to hear commentary on him. Probably wouldn't have made it through the qualifier anyway.

The Euros haven't got a hance at the Ryder Cup with him running the show.
Just wait until the Ghost of H S Colt rakes CM over the coals!

I wonder if the USGA would be better off having an additional entry classification.

I suspect that most of the players who WD never had an intention to play in a qualifier - that is that they entered merely in the hope that they became qualified through another means (money list, rankings etc.) that requires an entry to be filed before that entry qualification closes. If those players could check-off a box stating that they have no intention to play in a qualifier then the USGA could do a better job of planning the qualifier and designating the number of "spots" to come from it.

Monty's playing lousy and he knows it-but what gives you the right Mr Correctness to make statements like you do-your handicap is what?how many pro events have you won recently? And with comments like that do you have any clue why we enjoy stuffing you so much in the R C?!!!

It's time for the USGA to eliminate the UK sectional qualifier. The Brits don't deserve it.

I look forward each year to see how many players tee up in qualifiers for The Open Championship and post a NR because they played badly.
Incredibly last year there were 65!!

Wonderful Scott and Greenfee!A beautiful example of why you lovely people are so popular over here!Arent you the country that plays world championships in sports that nobody else plays?!Have you ever left the good ole U S of A or are you happy in your own little world believing that everything is bigger, better and oh so fine?Have a nice day!

Chico...Harpo and Zeppo called to say that they'd like some fresh criticisms of America on this forum. We've heard the "you only play sports amongst yourselves" line only about 8 billion times in the last year, always from Brits. Cheers bruvva.

Ted Peterson's suggestion might be a good change for both opens.
However, it still leaves me to wonder:
Why are there so many WDs for the USGA qyalifier in Europe and the R&A qualifer in the US?
This does not appear to happen with the other qualifiers for the 2 Opens.

Thanks Scott-I stand corrected.8 billion-see-even your exaggerations are bigger and better tha ours!
05.25.2009 | Unregistered Commenterchico
Perhaps Monty is of the opinion that the U.S Open has turned into an exhibition game !!
05.25.2009 | Unregistered CommenterGreengrass
Hey GeorgeM what is this R&A qualifier you refer to in the US, surely you mean the first, the one and only, "The Open".
05.25.2009 | Unregistered CommenterGreengrass
Hey guys,
I know you can spot the Yank posters on here a mile away by their total and utter lack of respect and tolerance.

But there is no need for us to crawl down to their level.
05.25.2009 | Unregistered CommenterTom M
"the open" = "world championships in sports nobody else plays." btw, if nobody else plays then the american championship can accurately be called the world championship. this is not the case when your event is called the open and there are other opens in other countries.

no doubt this failure to kowtow to the old country shows typical yank lack of class, but what can be done?
05.25.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
Lol Chico, I'm a Brit. I was only referring to players who have a hissy fit and post a NR simply because they are playing badly.
Though I fail to see how the original article should cause you so much offence, the same principle applies if you enter a tournament don't withdraw just because you don't fancy it.
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commentergreenfee
Greenfee-its not the original article that bothers me at all its some of the posters reaction to it.I know I shouldnt lower myself and argue but I cant help it-its so much fun waiting for a reply!!
To answer Thusgone-if you win a Championship only Americans play in then you are Champion of America-which in itself is a considerable feat-but of the World-no!The Open was called thus when it started back in the dark ages-so why change ?
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterchico
Dear Chico,

What gives me the right?

Monty does. He's a public figure competing as a professional. He mouths off and under performs on a regular basis. I don't need to compete in pro tournaments to recognize a bloated turkey when I see one.

By the way, since you brought it up, how many tournaments has Monty won lately?

And next time read the name correctly. It says "Politcal correctness is a CRIME" not Political Correctness.

Please stay on your side of the pond. We have enough angry morons here already.
Dear Mr C-I'M not angry-I am greatly amused-and your latest reply only serves to increase my amusement 10 fold!Dont ya just love being wound up?I'll be over to your side just as often as normal-theres actually quite a few nice people over there-I just doubt if you are one of them.
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterchico
chico: we'll just have to agree to disagree about whether the best team in the world can accurately be called world champion or not.

as for the open, when it was begun back in the dark dark days before the titanium driver and ian poulter design, the nomenclature was correct. now (which is where we are, by the way. sometimes you sheep islanders seem to lose track of that fact) there are several other "opens," which renders the article "the" in your fine national championship both inaccurate and obsolete. thus, if we were to be both accurate and current in our naming of things, we would call your wonderful national championship "an open championship."

in other news, the sun now sets on the british empire. hope this helps.
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
Ok guys I have to give up now-my sides are now aching so much I cant go on!Just a thought check out sarcasm and irony in the dictionary-or have they been left out just like the word gullible?!
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterchico
chico: while in the dictionary (oed, no doubt), take a look at these: supercilious, orthodontia. cheerio now!
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
What other dictionary is there?!Anyway I'm off to check the persimmon driver story-fascinating post!Just bet one of my junior team (in the Scotland squad)that he cant break 80 using my old T ony Penna and a Titleist professional.
05.26.2009 | Unregistered Commenterchico
The British press criticise American players for not making the trip over to Britain to play in Open Qualifying.

But they're starngely silent when some of their cuddly Ryder Cup heroes fail to turn up for US Open qualifying just 20 miles from home.

Odd, that.
