And When There Were Eight...

Here's how the finale would have been had they just played an 8-man shootout over 18 holes of the Tour Championship (I'd prefer 36 the last day):

Phil Mickelson 65

Sean O'Hair 69

Steve Stricker 69

Padraig Harrington

 69

Tiger Woods 70

Steve Marino 71

Ernie Els 71

Kenny Perry 74

That would be sweet! Would ties be settled by a coin flip or ro-sham-bo?

VERY nice choice of Bobby Jones quotes for today !

So you're suggesting playing the first 36 at East Lake, then cutting to the final 8 ? I could live with that. The fans would hardly notice - most were following Phil and Tiger's groups anyway.

I think they have this format pretty much right, but they've got the same problem that college football has: that you don't have to win the big won to get crowned the champion.

I'd like to see thus be a 72 hole season ender that starts on Wed, with the champ crowned on Sat and the top 4 in the final Fed Ex standings having the option of (A) quitting after Sunday or (B) contributing their checks from the entire playoffs to charity (a prerequisite) and going to 36 holes of match play on Sunday, winner take all, for $10MM plus all the checks. If anyone bails, the #5 man goes in, etc.

Unique. I like the concept!

TO get the big reward of $10mm, you've got to make a charitable contribution with your past earnings and, therefore, take a risk to get the big reward.

Nice idea!

Why would professional golfers have to give up winnings to become eligible to win more money? Tennis does not do that nor, of course, do any professional team sports. . . I would support college football and basketball coaches giving up some of their "highest paid state employee" money however. . .

I also think the Fed Ex Cup had an appropriate finish. . . The winner was the person who performed the best throughout the 4 "playoff" events - and of course did well during the "regular season" too. . . My impression is - based upon the season long hype - that was the purpose of the playoff concept. . .
If the Tour wants a "winner take all" concept they should drop the pretense that the "regular season" means anything at all or that the playoff events do either - other than narrowing to 30 players - which the Tour Championship has done for years.
