Waste Management Friday

The crowd was noticeably larger today but announced at a comical 101,709. Still, even if it was half or 3/4 of that total, it's a mighty impressive turnout. Behavior held steady until late in the day, but overall it's a decently behaved group considering how aggressively the spirits are flowing.

Even more interesting for me is the policy on cell phones. Fans are asked to put them on vibrate but no attempt is made to police usage. I've heard one phone ring in two days even though I was unable to Tweet or receive calls out on the course because of data overload issues brought on by so many people in one spot. I've seen no fans using cell phones on the course other than to send text messages or read emails. The combination of so much commotion at key spots along with the laissez faire attitude toward phones seems to help make it a non-issue. That, or the potential for intense heckling by fellow fans if a phone goes off. Market forces, baby!

A few shots from another perfect day in Scottsdale:

2nd round co-leader Camilo Villegas left himself with an incredibly difficult fairway bunker second shot on the par-4 17th. It looks pretty simple, but the combination of water behind and a tiered green made this quite tough (click image to enlarge)

Both Waste Management and PF Changs are giving out these free "Box Seats" to fans and they're a huge hit. I sat on one and it was quite comfortable. They are also fully recyclable and already made out of recycled materials (Click on image to enlarge)On the par-4 17th and 18th tees, Camilo scribbled numbers furiously. I asked him after the round what exactly he was computing on par-4 tees and it's hard to say whether his cranky answer was a product of (A) thinking I was a novice scribe from the Phoenix Penny Saver making my first tournament appearance or (B) it was a product of his last hole bogey. (Click to enlarge)

The warning for Saturday was posted throughout the course. Players will tee off in threesomes after the cut is made. Only Matt Every has a 3 footer for the field to complete round 2 so the cut can be made, like to 79 players. (Click to enlarge image)

Looks like Braxton is making the cut, right?

So you are suggesting a Tour event can attract huge crowds having a great time with no Eldrick? Haven't we been sold on the notion this is not possible? Good weather, lots of booze and an otherwise stellar field helps I suppose.

Too bad Daly's not there. Could be the Waist Management Open

Re Camilo from another board:

I worked the Quail Hollow Championship last year as a marshall, and I was the guy behind the teebox with the flag who pointed where the ball was going so that the guys in the fairway didn't get killed. On Monday, the news circulated that Camilo was one of the players who hated the flags, and not to flag him. Both times I worked, he walked to the teebox and looked at me and said "Please keep the flag down." From what I heard, he stepped onto every teebox for 6 days and asked every marshall not to flag him. I can't imagine how old that gets for him every week. He was a very small little dude--one of the smallest in that event."

I like your news about the tournament's cell phone policy. Strictly enforce the policy about keeping the ringers off, perhaps set aside designated spots for calls, but allow the fans to text and check emails. In this day and age, many employers/bosses/clients expect essentially 24/7 access. I now find taking workdays off to attend golf tournaments very difficult for this reason. (And those phone/internet tents are not conveniently located and usually have long lines). In addition, the options of doing something on your own away from your group (or arriving at different times) are limited, because you have to make advance arrangements about where and when to meet and you have no flexibility to adjust the plans. Texting would be much simpler. The PGAT and the USGA need to make things easier for the fans shelling out the money to attend the tournaments.

So the little Spanish spider monkey is showing some similar Tiger traits ... the control freak related traits that finally helped tame Tiger? Camilo ... you've now been flagged!

When I was at the Western Open, having the PGA Tour iPhone app going made it easier to find players while walking the course. Kept in on silent mode and tried not to waive it around. It's too bad that "Don't be stupid" doesn't work as an official policy.

I heard from a friend who witnessed it that Camilo played an entire 18-hole pro-am round without saying one word to any of his amateur partners. When are these petulant little pampered brats going to get it? We the amateurs, pay for EVERYTHING they receive:

We pony up the money for pro-ams
We buy the tickets at PGA Tour events
We watch the telecasts in sufficient numbers that sponsors advertise on the telecasts
We buy the products that their sponsors pay them big bucks to endorse
We serve as volunteers so more money can go into their pockets instead of to overhead

WE are their paycheck!

Geez, Camilo, how about a little perspective...
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBigSky
BigSky ... they don't see it that way. I know you know that. The hell with the Tour creeps and dull personalities. Vote with your spending, or not.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Priss!
Miss Priss!...agreed. They think they're doing us all a big favor by "allowing" us to "watch them" play golf, and therefore shouldn't be demeaned by being "forced" to play with amateur hacks. If they had their way, the tour would cancel pro-ams and raise their fees to the events and/or sponsors to cover the lost revenue. They don't understand that part of the purpose of pro-ams is public relations and sponsor outreach.

When they've been the center of the universe since they were junior golfers their perspective gets skewed.

Spoiled. . . Arrogant. . . Inconsiderate. . . Center (Masters) of the Universe. . . Pampered brats. . . Those traits describe quite a few people these days. . . But, at least athletes offer the opportunity for us to not watch them perform . . . The Wall Street crowd - which have those traits in spades - forced us to spend our money on them.

Miss Priss!...I realize the original source was the Enquirer, but did you read this from a couple of days ago?

"Tiger Woods has high-tailed it to Arizona to kick his addiction to painkillers and sleeping pills, the New York Post reported Thursday."

Here's the link...http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/tiger_in_heat_of_the_desert_CIustcWEkQ8gLoT7abNLRM

If true, it certainly answers a few questions about Tiger's condition on Thanksgiving night, and a few more about why he hasn't been more forthcoming...

Oops...sorry...wrong link. Here's the correct one:

The Tiger Tale just gets sadder. Sex addiction? I don't know ... but addiction to drugs is real, life altering, and truly serious business. Who's to say Tiger goes away for quite a while. Many of you have. If he does ... we'll survive.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Priss!
MP!: Colombian, not Spanish. Spain's contribution to the TOUR need not be fouled by another petulant little pissant (who is a much better golfer than Camilo, btw). One is quite enough.

Anyway, Kevin: Since those flags are as much for the safety of the spectators as anything, how can the TOUR go along with that request.
Wisconsin Reader...

Agreed on all points. We can just turn off the TV or change the channel when it's sports. But Wall Street? You and I get to reach for our wallets to bail them out and then watch them repeat the same behavior but this time with OUR money! Truly stunning...
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBigSky
BigSky ... I'm sorry I didn't answer all of your questions, and I pride myself on responding to anyone's questions. After all, I'm a cool schoolteacher. I get to be shrill for a living and fix bad manners that have been taught to my scholars by their parents!

Anyway, I'm an Esquirer devotee ... and right now I'm more concerned that Whitney Houston is dying. Good for her!
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Priss!
Enquirer! Sorry!
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Priss!
Is she truly dying, or just performing poorly on her current tour?
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBigSky
Thanks, Ky Laffoon's Ghost ... you spectral presence on this golf web site and whatnot! Praise the fat drunk pro-am fat cat who gets in the spider monkey's face one day and tells him what for! Go America!
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Priss!
Well, maybe not dying ... but perhaps having a hard time singing for an hour and a half in Australia and coming off dope at the same time ... which looks like you're dying!

By jove, some of dem arizonans were really tanked up on the beer. Must have scottish blood in 'em!
This thread is like the 16th hole in Arizona. None of it makes a blind bit of sense. Miss Priss, you really are a cheerleader. I can see you in the bleachers now.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterPickworth
Just like life sometimes, Pickworth. Not one blind bit of sense. Anyway, underneath the bleachers ... by Seymour Butt.

The GolfChannel and pgatour.com's love affair with all thing Rickie Fowler is both sickening and disturbing. The broadcast goes on mute whenever he comes on.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterFowlie
Fowler's only real claim thus far is to be the first PGA pro to compete in pajamas.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterAverage Golfer
Well, since we've already trashed this thread, let me ask a question that's a bit off topic but still about the tournament...

Did anyone else notice Camilo's blatant commercialism on behalf of Red Bull? It seems the guy can't do a post-round interview without his can of Red Bull. He did it twice at the Match Play and now twice at Phoenix.

Call me a cynic, but I feel like I'm watching the Winter Olympics where the skiers can't get their skis off fast enough after a race!
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBigSky
The denizens of the 16th hole are nothing but drunken Midwestern rabble. Why must golf be dragged into the cultural sewer?
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterChema
To some extent we can thank Tiger Woods for bringing some of these fans to the game. For the most part, they're the younger generation, and for sure they don't have any clue about the game's history or tradition. Still, we can't ban them from the event, but I agree with Chema that the 16th is a bit over the top even if the Phoenix Open is more a party than a golf tournament.
02.27.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBigSky
I was out there a lot today guys and I'm a big traditionalist, but I think it's great. People are having fun at a golf tournament. It's different for sure, but as I noted in Saturday's post, it's an interesting examination of today's players.
02.27.2010 | Registered CommenterGeoff
Big Sky ... my thoughts exactly when I saw him being interviewed post round. Too much of a coincidence. It's bad enough the sponsors require them to they keep their hats on when being interviewed but this is really tacky.

Rickie Fowler looked really, really stoopid in that hat.

Wonder how Mrs Doubtfire would've coped with the 16th!
