More On Masters 3D...

...from a Sony release:

Sony Electronics will support the effort not only as a sponsor of the 3D telecast, but also as an industry expert, along with supplying the latest advances in professional camera equipment and its 3D-capable televisions. Comcast will join in the production by providing the distribution channels necessary to deliver the content free to households throughout the United States. Additionally, Comcast and IBM, the Tournament’s technology partner, will combine efforts to offer the 3D feed via www.masters.com.

Two hours of live afternoon 3D coverage will be available each day beginning during Wednesday’s Par 3 Contest on April 7 and continuing throughout the four Tournament rounds, Thursday, April 8 – Sunday, April 11.

Does that mean all the players have to wear those funny glasses? :)

Wouldn't it be great if they could PPV it into a few movie theaters that have 3-D screens, especially on the weekend.

Oooh, the theater idea is awsome. I'd pay $30. Maybe more.

Bah, I know how to spell awesome. Maybe Geoff will correct my typo. Maybe he won't.

Erik,
I am a little surprised that with the 3D announcement that there weren't some venues announced for viewing the final round. For example, the World Golf Hall of Fame has a theater complex, including an IMAX. I'm sure that technically this isn't possible to do yet, but that would be pretty cool assuming 3D is as interesting for golf as we've been told.

Putting the telecast into theaters were certainly help sell 3-D sets. Also suprised there was no announcement by ANGC or CBS. Now maybe someone will ask with enought time to book some venues.
I remember maybe 40 years ago when Indianapolis broadcasts were shown at Memorial Coliseum (Portland), which had 10,000+ seats

Live 3D theater TV is technically possible if the theater can get the live feed. There have been experiments with NFL and college football games in theaters in the last few years, and the NBA showed an NBA Finals 3D telecast in Cleveland in 2007 to 14,000 fans. That's a lot of glasses!

IMAX would be pretty sweet - hard to get the logistics worked out for this kind of event, I'd imagine. I want a beer or two during my viewing, please. :)

It would be interesting to really "do-up" a venue though(World Golf HOF, for example...) - have putting contests, maybe a fake bunker or two for some short-game splashes...perhaps a very decent immersive "vitual golf" experience showcasing Augusta(which doesn't exist for any video game golf except for Links 2003, and it's excellent, lol)

I see plenty of possibilities - but my imagination in this area(3d sports broadcasting) knows no bounds...now back to my regularily-scheduled menial labor, lol.

Cheers all,

LK
