« "I sure wish we had gotten to see her play a little longer." | Main | Tiger-Hank Breakup Clippings, Vol. 1 »

Johnny: "I know it’s Tiger Woods, but he’s really gonna struggle to just tie Jack’s record.”

You can listen here to Johnny Miller or just read Steve Elling's summary of Johnny's latest comments about Tiger's swing and his abandonment by Hank Haney.

Said Miller of the majors quest: "I think he needs to get a new teacher to give him hope. When you go to a new guy, hope springs eternal. If he gets a guy who can teach him the basic fundamentals and let his natural talent come to the fore, yeah, he could even play a great U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Mr. Ebersol, do you still want me to get Johnny on the line?

"He’s got enough time to sort it out, because his chipping is good and his irons are good. As for the record, I talked about it in my book ‘I Call The Shots.’ I wrote that you just never know with family life and desires and injury.

There are subtle book plugs and then there are Johnny's...

"Boy, he’s at 14 already, and to get to 18, that’s a whole career. Look at Phil Mickelson, he’s worked his butt off to get to four majors. So, I know it’s Tiger Woods, but he’s really gonna struggle to just tie Jack’s record.”

Some folks called BS on Haney the personality/teaching methods when he first started with Tiger. I never understood what their beef was...maybe it was why mess with perfection and Tiger wanting somebody all his own. Remember when Tiger and Clarke had to share the range at La Costa with Harmon during the Match Play finals and Clarke beat him?

I had to put Miller's book down after the first 50 pages with no less than ten factual errors. The only book I ever considered returning.

Abandonment is a key description Geoff - one that fits perfectly and he has never had to deal with. The roots of this go back to Earl and the way Tiger conducted himself after he was gone (Shrink 101)

Yeah, but Tiger was apparently "conducting himself" even before Earl left us, wasn't he?
Thanks for the editorial attempt Ky, but I think you get my point. From the trysts made public, most of the majority were post Summer 06 - at least the ones he got caught with. None of them were in Zinc or Springfield either.

Either way, he learned from the best.

Johnny's the classic Prophet of Doom. Of course when your own playing career disappears like a fart in the wind who can blame him.

I disagree that Johnny is the Prophet of Doom when it comes to Tiger. Following Tiger's romp at Pebble in 2000 Johnny wrote an article for Time magazine (I think it was Time) declaring unreservedly that Tiger would win the Open Championship that year at St. Andrews. Moreover after the second round at the Open Championship in 2002 when Tiger was in or near the lead Johnny said that Tiger would get it done because he was a "thoroughbred". Of course the elements conspired against Tiger the next day and blew him out of the tournament.

Love him or hate him, Johnny is always entertaining.

the record is clear on my prescience. if you look back at my book, "i call bs," you'll see that i predicted all this.

tiger will still beat jack's record when it's all said and done

I enjoy Johnny as a broadcaster, one of my favorites, but it's very easy to say Tiger won't catch Jack right now. There was actually a chapter in his book devoted to whether Johnny thought Tiger would get the Majors record, and Johnny's conclusion was no. I wonder if Johnny was sticking with that prediction in 2008, after Tiger had claimed his 14th major in 11 years on Tour?

Love him or hate him, I wouldn't bet against Woods getting the record. Outside of hounding hoochies, that's his only purpose in life. He's one of the best ever on Tour with a wedge in his hand, arguably one of the best clutch putters. He's finished in the Top Six the past several years at Augusta playing "slop" golf. Barring any major injuries, I contend the only thing separating ETW from The Record is a new swing or coach, correcting his on-course mind, and time. And his clock certainly isn't running out anytime soon.

Tiger has 23 more major tournaments to play before he turns age 40. I wouldn't say "he's really gonna struggle just to tie Jack's record" just yet.

Did JM happen to mention that he shot 63 at Oakmont in the US Open?

I want to short Tiger breaking Jack's records. Who wants long?

I might even short Tiger coming back at all at this point in time ...

Hey Laffoon,

You want those free classic balls I offered months ago ? Hell, I'll even throw in a 1.62 British ball of the brand that Jack was forced to play (probably cost him 4-5 majors). Geoff has my secure e-mail, if you're nice he might give it to you.

Ron -

Yes, Tim Clark I believe. But he didn't use the yellow Srixon ball, so nobody is paying attention.

Here's what I don't understand, and where I reluctantly agree with Mr. Miller; all the talk from Tiger fanboys (and even just Tiger admire-boys) about his legendary mental toughness is based on obsolete evidence. Yeah, when Tiger was a highly praised, loved, rich, successful, no-problems-whatsoever guy, he possessed the mental toughness to win tournaments and Majors. But now that he is a vilified, soon-to-be-divorced father of two (pretty dang cute) kids that he'll rarely see, but surely miss, there's no reason to think his mental composure may suffer a blow? Really?

I'm not saying it's not possible. I'm just saying that there is no evidence of how Tiger performs when his personal life is in the crapper, other than the last few months. How he performed from 2000-2004 is totally irrelevant.

I'll wait and let everyone else pile on the other side. Say ... just until the announcement of neck surgery upcoming. Just before that announcement (leading to his failed neck surgery) to quadruple my position.

Oh yes, he'll do it.
05.12.2010 | Unregistered CommenterGolfFan
Linus you are right. Tiger should go back to his sex addicted pill popping days. With divorce on horizon he is halfway there. It worked before. This new Tiger or so he says ain't workin so good. I think Buddhism will allow him to follow his bliss unlike Christianity, Brit Hume. I look forward to the old Tiger. Cause the new one sucks.

I don't like to pile on people when they are already down from making bad purchases, but why on earth would you buy a book by Johnny Miller?
05.12.2010 | Unregistered CommenterPress Agent
I heard Miller got writer's yip after a few chapters.

(Actually, I prefer his announcing to anyone else's. I like his honesty, wit and wisdom.)
05.12.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTXQ
How did the 1.62" ball (which JN was not forced to use) cost him 4 to 5 majors? Why would you assume that he would have won more (British) Opens than any of the other majors that prohibited use of the smaller ball?

Dan,

Nothing to do with the size, sorry you missed the point and perhaps I wasn't clear enough that is was the inferior brand. If you admire Jack's work like I do, you know what he was forced to play due to contract obligations.
05.12.2010 | Unregistered CommenterOld Hornet
Johnny Miller is a great salesman of erroneous information. Lucky for him most people don't have a clue and buy the whole " I'm just being honest and saying what others won't" schtick. Maybe he wouldn't have gone winless for 3 years after his woodchopping experiment if he had known all he had to do was go back and look at the tape of his Open win!

I've been having major doubts about Tiger breaking the Nicklaus record since BEFORE the Thanksgiving mess.

The signs were there at Hazeltine when Yang bitch slapped him.

Short him on the Nicklaus record and don't bet the house that he even gets to 15.

Golf is a funny game. Things can leave you pretty quick.

Four majors? That's not just "a career's" worth. That's TWO lifetimes, if you're Johnny Miller...

In my ink-stained wretch days I interviewed Gary Player and asked him whether he thought Tiger would beat Jack's record.

Player: No.
Squeaky: Why not?
Player: (very long pause) Because ... he misses too many fairways with his driver in major championships.

No wonder! That some set of forward tees. I think you meant the 7th, Kevin. :)

D.B. Cooper,

Was Jack bitch slapped by Watson at Pebble and Turnberry or Trevino at Carnoustie?

TW finally had someone beat him at a major, just as Jack had several majors lost
to players who "bitch slapped" him to win using your logic.

I think Sir Nick had it about right when he said at Quail Hollow that tiger's swing is out of balance, just like the rest of his life.

His sunglasses were first used at Augusta ostensibly to keep out pollen, but since then he has used them extensively

I believe it is to avoid eye contact with the gallery.

His life is out of control and the more he tries to .control it, the more it gets away from him.
05.12.2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Q
The Q,

Player beat Nicklaus at Carnoustie.

Get your facts straight.
05.12.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
byw, The Q, don't get your panties all in a bunch over the term "bitch slap."

It is just a colorful term I've heard and is not meant to be offensive to Yang or Tiger.

Still, really admired the way Yang handled Tiger on 18 at Hazeltine after Woods tried some gamesmanship earlier.
