Almost; he was playing a different ball. Tiger switched to the modern Nike 2-piece ball before the 2000 US Open, which gave him a huge advantage. The Titleist players had to wait until that fall for the Pro V1 to be released.
So while this is still a titanic achievement, there is definitely an asterisk that needs to be discussed.
