Awkward! Michael Collins Alleges Pre-Drug Testing Pot Use On PGA Tour

Bob Carney noted the awkwardness of the exchange between on-course reporter Michael Collins and Golf Channel's Kraig Kann and Frank Nobilo discussing the Robert Garrigus story from Golf World and Collins shocks them by saying marijuana smoking also once took place on the PGA Tour. Of course, now everyone is clean as a whistle he says.

Frankly, I found two things shocking about this.

First, that perhaps Tim Finchem's insistence of no need for drug testing may have been naive. And two, that Kraig Kann's name is, if you go by Collins, pronounced in such a way that might make him a distant relative of baseball writer Roger or actress Madeleine

This is just a lot to take in for a holiday weekend.

In the early 90s I worked for a local sports reporter who just came from Santa Barbara. Had done a local story about an up and coming golf star in the area so he decided to walk nine holes with the kid to get some video and a few quotes. Around the 3rd hole, the kid, in front of the reporter and the cameraman (camera was not rolling) lights up a joint for a few puffs. Guy ends up being a Ryder Cupper. My guess is most guys on the tour have smoked pot at some point in their lives.

Yea smoking pot is now a hot topic! Black light posters and waterbeds are the rage on tour.

Born to be wild!

sheesh.

Frank Noblow acting all high(get it) and mighty has been unbelievably funny, I don'y care who you are.

TGC's attempt to get a scandal going is so frigging obvious. Get pullover viewings from scandal loving Americans! What could go wrong. this is getting too good.

shoot, maybe thar guy who used to teach tw and charles barkley can start a new TV show, with herbal putting tips and such. I'll watch.

I would be far more impressed if someone came out and admitted to doing a Doc Ellis in the final round of a major while in contention or in a Ryder Cup match.

I have never smoked pot - not once - and never plan to. But, pot is not a performance enhancing drug no more the alcohol is. I don't think the tour should test for it. Pot use is between the player and the police.

One time I was playing a senior beach volleyball tournament in Santa Barbara. A guy on the other team started cramping. Now all veteran beach volleyball players know that the best remedy when this occurs is to drink some beer. So with the difficulty of playing against a wounded warrior and his cramping ending, the beer helped, they came back and beat us. Still makes me mad that we lost. This drug thing is going to go on and on. You put money and pride into the equation and the male will try anything to prevail.

Why should the PGA drug test? We all know how difficult the game is. If anyone is dumb enough to compete under the influence, well, they're days on the tour will take care of themselves when they start missing cuts, losing money and lose their tour card.

As long as they aren't on steroids or PED's, who cares? Ironically, with all the Cialis ads, the tour is practically funded by Performance Enhancing Drugs.

If marijuana would help my golf game, I'd be on the phone right now, getting my medical marijuana card. Period. Just let me know how much I should be using. I. Don't. Think. So.

I think I'd rather have the players on marijuana, than have their Pro V1's on steroids.

I would not want to trip and play golf for fear of seeing Jim Nantz's face on the ball at address.
