No Poa There: Tiger Commits To Honda Classic

For Immediate Release:

TIGER WOODS COMMITS TO THE HONDA CLASSIC

Tiger Woods, a new resident of Martin County, has committed to compete in the 2012 Honda Classic, a PGA TOUR event that will be played February 27-March 4 just 20 minutes from his Jupiter Island home at PGA National Resort & Spa.

It will be Woods' first appearance at The Honda since he competed in the event as an amateur in 1993 and his first professional appearance in the Palm Beach County / Treasure Coast area of Florida that he now calls home.

"I have heard great things about The Honda Classic," Woods said. "Now that I live here, I want to play whenever possible. Jack's involvement in the tournament and the benefits to the local community are also important."

Woods' game has been resurgent in recent weeks as he seeks his first PGA TOUR victory since September 2009. After winning the Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, CA in December, Woods finished third in his first event of the new year - the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

Then he was in contention in his 2012 PGA TOUR debut at Pebble Beach until he struggled with his putting in Sunday's final round.

"I feel very at peace where I'm at," Woods said at Pebble Beach. "I had to make some changes and that took time. And I'm starting to see the results of that now, which is great. My last four events I've played really well. So I'm just building on that. Everything is headed in the right direction."

Woods' commitment is a huge endorsement for The Honda Classic, which has steadily been rising in stature with TOUR players since its move to PGA National in 2007. Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, currently ranked No. 2 and 3 in the world, are already part of an international field that also includes defending champion Rory Sabbatini, major winners Charl Schwartzel and Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell, Mark Calcavecchia, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Louis Oosthuizen, Camilo Villegas, 2007 champion Mark Wilson and 2005 champion Padraig Harrington.

"We obviously are thrilled to have Tiger Woods play in The Honda Classic," Executive Director Ken Kennerly said. "We have worked hard for five years to make this one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR. This is a testament to where the tournament has come and a testament to Honda's 31 years as the longest-standing sponsor on the PGA TOUR.

Easy there Ken, the guy lives in the neighborhood now. Let's not oversell this one. Too late...

"We are once again going to have a great world-class field. We have been extremely pleased with the growth of our field. Now to have Tiger not only as a local resident, but as a leader in the world of golf, is a tribute to all of our partners -- American Honda, PGA National for having a fantastic facility, PGA of America, Palm Beach County, and the City of Palm Beach Gardens. It is so gratifying to see improvement made year after year and to have Tiger commit this year is a further acknowledgement of our growth and success."

I know Tiger gets dogged constantly, most of it deserved, but he does seem to be trying to do the right things and even say the right things. I'm sure he feels an obligation to Jack to play in this event. Good job Tiger.

I'd rather see Tiger playing at Riviera this week.

must be the lure of that Bear Trap...

Jack to Johnny:
Well I really wanted to make sure they had to hit a golf shot there, John.
And not just a good shot, I mean 'a' shot, a high fade. So short's dead, bailout left's worse, over the back, forget about it...

@ Kevin Perhaps Jack asked him to play? After all, PGA National is right in Tiger's back yard. He can stay in his own home and have no more than a 20-25 minute drive to the golf course - just like he use to do at Bay Hill. It will be old home week for TW and the boys. Good for Tiger. Maybe he is trying to do some of the 'right things' as you mentioned. Supporting the local PGA Tour event that Jack and Barbara Nicklaus put so much energy in to is a big step in that direction. And he will get some decent putting surfaces. Expect the "home town" crowds to be record setting.

Is Tiger in Martin Co or Palm Beach Co? Whatever I love it. Good for you T.

I have no problem with Woody adding a PGA event here and there but seriously Dover, this?

<< And he will get some decent putting surfaces. >>

"So what you're telling me is, Woodhead is the only guy who GREW UP on Poa who can no longer putt that grass? And can somebody 'splain to me just how Phil (Jib Jab) Mickelson CAN putt Poa like nobody's business when it counts? And isn't Torrey Pines (TW: 6 wins) Poa Annua as well?

Have fun, neighbor.

LOL, the comments on this thread. I am glad he's adding an event, I think he needs to play an extra event than he was before the Masters.

Realistically, he could have added Honda or Riv, but both would've been to much (5 weeks in a row), no right or wrong answer, but being able to stay at home is probably a good deciding factor.

Does this mean he will skip Doral, or will he play three consectutive weeks on the PGA Tour? That would be the first time since I don't know when. Maybe he's counting on an early exit from the Match Play...

@ bensettle The putting surfaces at PGA National are in very good condition - have you played there recently - as in the last 3 weeks? The comment refers to PGA National's Tif-Eagle greens (Champions Course) can not be an excuse for a poor performance. Nothing else intended. Settle down. I still would not discount the Nicklaus influence in TW playing at PGA National. Plus, TW realizes he needs the 'reps' before Augusta and this logistically makes a lot of sense. Re: putting, with respect to Henry Longhurst on the unmentionables: "Once you get 'em, you got 'em".

@ Papa Bing TW's home is in Palm Beach County.

@Hawkeye TW say's he plans to play at Doral as usual

first three in a row since the two weeks leading into hazeltine, and we know how that worked out for him ... 1-1-Yanged

Re: putting surfaces You can well bet the putting surfaces at The Honda Classic will be much firmer, quicker, and smoother than what the players experienced at PBGL this past week. The Lion King will not have any reason to bring up any comments about the greens. Word is out of Ponte Vedre that Finchem is so excited about having Mr. Woods grace the Honda event, he has asked for a temporary restraing order so that holes #15-17 can be renamed the Tiger's Snare for the week of the event. No comment from Nicklaus Design firm as yet.
We can expect a rating boost of 30-40%. Great for the game, as usual, when Tiger deigns to play, whether the haters like it or not.

@AK47 he played 3 in a row in the 2010 play-offs (Barclay, Boston, Chicago). He plays 3 in a row on occasion, it's 4 in a row he won't do

Is he driving a Honda now?

Tiger does something "good" and all anyone wants to talk more crap on the guy. Gee whiz.

Ben, he didn't complain about the greens. He said he didn't put the ball in the best spots to make putts.

And yes, three weeks in a row: http://web.tigerwoods.com/onTour/scheduleAndResults .
