Golf Channel Towers May Need To Be Retrofitted With Suicide Prevention Netting Following Tiger's Second Round Loss

Steve DiMeglio reports on Nick Watney's second round win over Tiger Woods, which sent the Golf Channel crew into a stupor that has me concerned for Kelly Tilghman's ability to enjoy the rest of her stay at the Ritz Carlton.

Seriously, when Nick Faldo says "we have to keep talking" as the rest of the team sounds positively moribund when a human being American misses a 5-6 footer on the last hole, there's something strange in the air!

Terry Gannon: "just stunned, there was a time when you would never see that."

If you carefully study the replay you'll notice that the hole moved at the last second.

Does this mean the "Tiger Tracker" will be deactivated?
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn
These guys should get over being "stunned" and simply accept the new normal.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered Commenterpasaplayer
...although at this point it's a stretch to call it "new".
02.23.2012 | Unregistered Commenterpasaplayer
Not just Golf Channel. Golf Digest, Golf Week and Golf Magazine are all shocked.

Golf Channel will continue to play replay after replay with analysis on Tigers putting.

Nicky Watney again helps to prove the Oldest Acronym in Golf.

Tiger Can't Win Without Cheap Trim

Eldridge's offspring, the Indiana Jones of the PGA 19th Hole Hunt, again fails with the eyes of the world upon him.

@Mark

Who is Eldridge and what does he have to do with Tiger?
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterGoose
Nor since he (and half the top ten) lost in the first round in 2002 has there been such a shock to golf.

Get a grip. He was lucky to survive Round One.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterCapSize
Damn ... and all those cool 'n' clever headlines have to go to the dustbin: "Tiger On A Tear, " "Tiger Waps Watney" and the ever-reliable "Tiger's Back!"

And who was it that wisely said that PGA Tour professionals don't lose their putting touch and suddenly regain it after the age of 35? (Of course, Woody can always ask Phil about that, I suppose.)

My favorite part? Recalling all the predictors and prognosticators on Golf Channel and other mindless outlets who -- out of sheer habit, I guess -- picked Woods to win the thing. Along with "Rainbow" Ricky Fowler, the Human Candy Cane who, despite being picked by more than one, despite having never won on Tour..... didn't bother to stick around past the first day. Which returns me to my warning about predicting the winner of A) sports events B) political contests B) the Oscars D) Miss America:

First, Nobody Cares who you choose and second, you're certain to be WRONG.

Tilghman will be crying herself to sleep tonight. And dreaming of the Honda........
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
Been busy. What happened today at Dove Mountain?
"Tilghman will be crying herself to sleep tonight."

I was trying to figure out what she would do for work if Golf Channel canned her. Still trying.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered Commenterrb
Didnt even hit the hole from 6 feet.....
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterJjgolfer
It's time for Tiger to stop protesting long putters, and try one! How much of a pucker factor did he feel after pooching that one?
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterShotly
No worries, 5 minutes after the round, Nobilo declared that Woods will win at Doral and go into Augusta as the favorite. These guys just can't help themselves.

Why no love for Rickie? He actually played well but ran into a buzzsaw in Toms. I think the reason they jump on his bandwagon is his refreshing attitude. If he can only get a win or two people may finally start to forget some of these other guys that just dont get it.

Now you know why the live Sky feed is the only way to go. I'm more interested in what happened to DJ, did he visit Dr. Frankenstein last night for a game transplant?
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterD. maculata
He will probably finish top 10 at the Honda next week and the Golf Channel can then declare that Comeback #7 is underway.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered Commentersgolfer
Whoops, sorry, we're only at Comeback #5 going on #6. Getting hard to keep track.

Comeback #1 declared at the 2010 Masters, died at the 2010 Players.
Comeback #2 declared at the 2010 US Open, died at the 2010 Bridgestone.
Comeback #3 declared at the 2010 Barclays, died at the 2011 Farmers/Torrey.
Comeback #4 declared at the 2011 Masters, died at the 2011 Players.
Comeback #5 declared at the 2011 Emirates Australian Open, died at the 2012 Accenture.

Why can't GC fall in love with "The Mechanic" ? The most interesting man in golf. GO MECHANIC!!
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterKevin
Kevin, I couldn't agree more. The Mechanic has the must go to stretch routine... Plus he knows how to stay warm inside!
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterAdam
Tiger is as unlikable as ever. Bad disposition and body language. How could anybody have ever called him charismatic? He's just uninteresting. Watney/Woods was about 6th on my list of interesting matches.

"It's a no-brainer, isn't it? That's my thought. It's Tiger Woods."

Nothing wrong with stupors. My friends and I considered them the pinnacle of a successful weekend.

Tiger lost. Get over it Golf Channel. And others...
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterSeán O'Nuallain
I'm hoping for a Peter Hanson vs. Sang-Moon Bae final.

Golf Channel would go off the air with that pairing.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterJSS
I'm not sure why they were stunned he missed it, since he'd been missing that putt all day. He made the one on 18 yesterday, missed it today. That's golf (even for the top players), Tiger never won every match-play event before and he's certainly not going to now, when he's not putting well. Never mind that I don't think he's a big fan of dessert golf.

But a lot of players were missing a lot of putts, and there were a lot of balls being played out of the dessert.

I'd currently tab Rory as the favorite. Quietly he's been playing fairly mediocre, but he's still alive. I expect him to start playing better over the next few days.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered Commenterelf
Kevin's started a new bandwagon, and I'm on it. Go Jimenez!

02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterA3
Oh, A3, thank you for uttering the thought I have had for years (for various reasons).

And elf: I thought it was Mickelson who was the big fan of "dessert" golf!

Here's a better question: Why all the love FOR Rickie? Oh, let me answer that. Adorn yourself with a 'do reminiscent of vintage Zach Efron and Justin Bieber, cloak yourself head-to-toe in colors never before witnessed outside of a carnival midway and suddenly you're the Next Big Thing waiting to happen. Only you don't happen.

Others will back me up on this. I walked into a major local golf store the other day (Puetz in Bellevue, WA) and there was a FULL-SIZE cardboard cutout of Fowler right next to the Cobra display. Swathed in orange from the end of his nose to the tips of his toes. (Hell of a trademark, Rick.) Are you like me? Don't you think a fresh young player with potential should actually WIN a few before he's anointed as an icon?

The red shirt fetish was old and tired years ago and now some wannabe subjects us to ORANGE every Sunday? Mark my words: in 10 or 15 years -- assuming anybody even remembers Rickie Fowler -- both him and everybody else will be asking "WHAT were you thinking?" Nice kid; I'd like to see him win. But until then, I'd prefer he stick to a nice dull shade of gray. Think Ben Hogan. (And I won't even get into the hats that look like they escaped from the giant tea-cup ride at Disneyland.)

(Oh, and Cobra? Don't you think the bright-orange grips on your new line of sticks is carrying "endorsement loyalty" just a shade too far?)
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
@BenS - like the post bud. Fowler kinda brings up shades of Ty Tryon to me.
02.23.2012 | Unregistered CommenterUh....
@BenS: Rickie played great golf, as did Manassero yesterday. They had bad luck with their pairing which is why you shouldn't rely on Matchplay result to make snap judgments about a player
02.24.2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan
<<And I won't even get into the hats that look like they escaped from the giant tea-cup ride at Disneyland.>>

Thank you benseattle for that gem! I had a few other descriptive terms for his choice of headwear...but yours is the best so far.

As for TW...it's all about the reps I suppose....he needs ALOT more...positive ones that is. Is it me or did he appear to be in a race to finish his putting stroke? Looked more like he was trying to swat a fly than a rolling action to me.

Call Mr Stockton asap Tiger...it's for your own good. At least he's won something in his life...unlike TW's past 2 go-to swing "gurus".

Now that the wheat is getting separated from the chaff...I'm liking the Mechanic! Go Miguel!!! Go Pica!
02.24.2012 | Unregistered Commenterjohnnnycz
@BenSeattle

I think your tastes may correlate with your age. The kids like the hats that way.
02.24.2012 | Unregistered CommenterGoose
Nowadays you don't have to win to ba a brand. Look at music, if you wave your hands in the air and the audience repeats after you, your brand can extend into movies and then later into production. It's amazing how one can be rewarded with riches nowadays.
02.24.2012 | Unregistered CommenterA3
Love benseattle's Disney Teacup analogy. I have other adjectives for the style du jour but most aren't suitable for a classy blog like this.

As for TW...it appears he's in a race to complete his putting stroke...like he's trying to swat flies from landing on his ball vs attempting to roll it into the hole...A call to Mr Stockton might be in order as well as yet more "reps".

Looking like another interesting tournament. I like the All-Scottish match as well as watching The Mechanic do his stuff...he seems impervious to what others are doing...a great way to match play a youngster to death. McIlroy might have his hands full with a cagey veteran.
02.24.2012 | Unregistered Commenterjohnnnycz
Ben:
I get the message, no doubt Cobra is perhaps riding the Rickie wagon a tad too much, and yes he should have to win first before all this hoopla, but I don't blame him for that.
Uh:
To compare Rickie to Ty Tryon? Come on man. He held his own in the Ryder Cup and has played consistently well since getting on Tour. Hasn't won yet but he is still young.
As for the style, I'm past that also but he's in his young 20's. Isn't there anything you regret about your style back then? Just because you guys still wear dockers with pleats doesn't mean youngsters should. If he dressed like Ben Hogan or wore khakis people would be dogging him for being a robot. As for the hat: DJ, Hunter M., etc..all wear that look. If more Tour pros had his disposition and attitude more kids might want to play the game.
OK, I am off the Rickie lovefest now.

<< @BenSeattle

Apparently, so do cardboard cutouts. The "Rickie" standup display in the golf shop was wearing the hat backwards. (Sorry, didn't that trend finally expire with Ken Griffey Jr. back in the late 90's?)

Just another sign that The End Is Near.
02.24.2012 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
Poking fun at GC for its Tiger-centricity is all well and good, but the truth is that a substantial portion of the traffic here and on other golf sites is Tiger driven.
02.24.2012 | Unregistered Commentertlavin
Yes everyone should dress and act the same, the way I do. And btw wearing the same color on Sunday was around long before Tiger and his red. At least the red and orange are a little different.

Phil always wears all back, like Player, Keegan seems to go red and white
