Rory Can Do No Wrong: Holds Against Sharapova!

Doug Ferguson mentioned the Madison Square Garden scene Monday night in his story about Rory McIlroy's rise, complete with quotes from admiring peers like Geoff Ogilvy.

McIlroy is so unbeatable right now he won a point off tennis star Maria Sharapova hours later. At Madison Square Garden on Monday night to cheer on girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki in an exhibition match, he was invited onto the court with Wozniacki a game from losing. In jeans and a sweater, McIlroy showed off a one-handed backhand, and Sharapova hit his lob wide.

Asked if he was surprised, McIlroy joked: “I’ve won a few off Caroline.”

Here's the YouTube video of ESPN's telecast. Now, about the Bill Cosby sweater...

I am looking for Caroline at the Par 3 tournament.
I can't imagine paying to attend that event and I like tennis.

I too am certainly glad I didn't pay to see this! But you can't blame Rory - he practically had to be dragged out of his seat to participate and made no attempt to hog the limelight when he saw he couldn't get out of it.

I expected the PA announcer to say "Fore, please,Rory McIlroy now (serving)"
Lip Out, those tix didn't cost just a little....they were a LOT.

Could Rory's fifteen minutes already be up? It's amazing how the PR apparatus does what it can to quickly overexpose a kid.

Seemed like a harmless bit of fun to me. Remember fun?

I agree with MacDuff. I did see a lot of people in the stands laughing. I am sure this wasn't the only part of the ticket price. Traditionally, laughing and clapping are signs of people have fun.

It was an "exhibition match" and the players and the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves. Isn't that the point? Kind of like this: Standing by the 6th tee one Masters Tuesday long ago while Fuzzy and Hubert came through. Fuzzy gave his club to a teenager, asked his name, and then announced him on the tee. The youngster then proceeded to scrape something down the hill toward the green. Clifford Roberts would not have been amused, but the several hundred "patrons" who saw it thought it was fun. And I'd wager that the kid still remembers it, too.
i liked it too

Harmless fun, as the others said.

We don't have to make fun of *everything*.

I'd take on Maria Sharapova any day...
