Tiger, Sean And Buddhism

Max Adler talks to Sean Foley about why he and Tiger do not do any pre-round instruction.

"The key of Buddhism is for the teacher to make himself obsolete to the student," Foley says. That Tiger is no longer requesting his services before tee time, like he did some at this year's Masters where he finished T-40, is encouraging to both. "That we're only working on technique after his rounds shows how much further ahead he is in the process," Foley says.

Uh-huh.
By the way- kudos to the USGA for letting NBC dictate start times for prime time $$$, a fog delay is very possible now.

What happened to neuroplasticity? Buddha, I believe you have the tee...
I'm not around to be seen on tv
so I have to explain why I am awesome.

Obsolete is the goal, huh?

We're getting there.

The last time I heard about "Buddhism" being invoked for Tiger Woods was in the winter of 2010. From behind a lectern, at Ponte Vedra:

http://articles.cnn.com/2010-02-19/living/tiger.woods.buddhism_1_buddhist-scholars-tiger-woods-buddhism?_s=PM:LIVING

When was the last time anybody saw the Tiger 'buddhist bracelet'?

I think that the core belief at the center of Tiger Woods' life is a good swing rhythm and confidence with the putter. "Buddha" is well down the list, below "Sportscenter," the VIP Room at the Aria, and snorkeling in Cayman Brac.

Has Foley become the new folly? What an eejit!
@chuck, um all yr

Anyways tiger had the same issue yesterday he's had all year, you rarely strike the ball well all 4 days, you rarely putt well all 4 days etc. All yr Tiger hasn't been hitting his wedges close, or chipping it close (and tw wasn't hitting it close the first two days either), means on the days when your iron game is off, or putting or whatever it's impossible to score. His game from tee to 125 yds is really good, but until he can figure out 125 until he's on the green, he's going to have problems with consistency, bad rounds etc.

What does Mr. Foley carry around in that pouch?
06.17.2012 | Unregistered CommenterSclaff & Foozle
I see from a few pictures on the green that Tiger does indeed have the bracelet on; it gets covered any time he has a glove on. It is only visible with his glove off.

I confess to having stopped paying attention to The Bracelet News after this:

Buddha just got here and apologizes for celebrating his day with his Father, which by the way, Buddha wishes the best to all Father's here on this Geoff Shackelford.com website.

I must disagree with Mr. Foley. I have never once ever said that Obsolence was a factor in Buddihism. The main factor is remaining with fresh mind and clean heart and walking the fine line that can sometimes be as sharp as a razor's edge. It is here Tiger will have to travel to find peace within. Winning may not be a factor in this recovery. Salvation will be the true reward! (well maybe that and a couple of really hot strippers!)

Been out playing. What's new? Has Tiger come back from that regrettable start? Looks like he did. Good for him. Bodacious leaderboard!

Bob and A3 for the win. Now, this is quite unbelievable, but driving home from the course I heard Krista Tippett interviewing a psychologist about neuroplasticity, meditation, and Buddhism among other things. Didn't hear anything about Sean Buddhism though. www(dot)onbieng(dot)org, the Richard Davison interview.
"being"
I'm not going to assume that Sean Foley will soon be fired. I am, however, confident in speculating his Popsicle allowance has been cut.

Buddha Boy Eldrick and the field are being dusted by a bunch of Bible-thumping Christian (First Bubba Watson at the Masters and now Webb Simpson).

The Foley/Buddha formula ain't working in majors.

Oh brother.
1) Practice well.
2) Play well at home.
3) Play well in a round or two in a PGA Tour event.
4) Play well for four rounds of a PGA Tour event.
5) Play well in a few rounds in a major.
6) Win a major.

After Bay Hill Tiger was between 3 and 4, maybe really close to #4.
At the Masters he was still there.
After Memorial Tiger was between 4 and 5, maybe really close to #5.
At the U.S. Open he was still there.

You can joke that he says "it's a process" all you want but he's kind of demonstrating what he means by it if you pay even a small amount of attention.

@EJBarzeski: your misguided faith is both inspiring and saddening. You remind me of those aged Japanese soldier they sometimes find who still believes that japan is still fighting wwii.
06.18.2012 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
Funny that you'd call it faith. It's nothing more than the simple but often under-used power of observation.
