Monty Can Relate To Murray's Tears

Cornered at the opening of Trump International yesterday, Monty told Martin Dempster he could relate to Andy Murray's tearful Wimbledon speech. And he also said we misunderstood him all those times he had a chance to win a major, and didn't.

“I don’t think I was understood. I was trying my hardest to beat the world’s best and win major championships. If it was that easy, I’d have done it long before now, believe me.

“It’s not easy and Andy showed humanity, if you like, that we hadn’t seen before and that was nice to see.

“I was tearful myself after a couple of losses in majors. The 1997 US Open at Congressional especially, as I felt I should have won that one [Ernie Els pipped the Scot by a shot]. I was tearful going home that night.

Is the Congressional the one where he stomped off the club premises leaving his wife behind?

No Monty, you're not a bit like Andy Murray.
I think Monty had the skills to win a major, but he never got it done, and that will always be his legacy, to an extent.
It has to haunt him.

Not a Monty fan in general though I always admired his ability to turn it up a notch or two @ the Ryder Cup, his record in that is nothing to be ashamed of.

True he will be remembered as one of the more-accomplished players to never win a major - but they weren't all chokes like the 72nd hole @ Winged Foot. If I recall correctly he played some incredible golf on that last day @ Riviera that Elkington won. Pretty sure his last 9 holes was quite good - no choking and some great shot-making and pressure putting.

Yes he was an incredible pratt most of the time - not saying otherwise here, just that his play in majors was better than people like to admit.

I must confess that I was rooting for Monty back at Winged Foot.... I thought it would've been a compelling story of perseverance that would befit someone of such an otherwise impeccable career.

I personally think Monty could have a career in the commentating box that could rival his playing career. He has a terrific sense of humor and obviously understands the game. He's a heck of a character with faults and failings like the rest of us, obviously never accepted in America and was never able to let things pass without taking it personally. However I'll take people like Monty with his weight struggles and obvious humanity over the robots coming out of the junior ranks of golf these days, you can't tell one from the other, nor do you really care to.
