"There’s just something about choosing to sit out a chance to play Riviera to prepare for a date at Dove Mountain that makes the head spin."

Jim McCabe in a collection of notes for Golfweek.com:

There’s just something about choosing to sit out a chance to play Riviera to prepare for a date at Dove Mountain that makes the head spin. Imagine Sinatra or Bennett saying no to Carnegie Hall so that they could play a few gigs on the Love Boat.

The Northern Trust Open does have the best field of 2013 to date, with 18 of the world top 30, 25 of the top 50 and 20 of 30 who made the Tour Championship last year.

So true, you just know Snedeker is beaming that he's a Pebble Champion. I'd think these guys would love to be a Riviera Champion as well. Sad that $ and OWGR rankings always take precedence. Just my take. McCabe is great and I miss his Thursday columns in the Boston Globe.

Why isn't Rory playing Riviera?

I'm surprised no reporters have picked up on Rory skipping Bay Hill again this year after Arnie publicly called him out last year.

Best thing to happen to Rory was Tiger and Phil winning early and Sneds superior play, the media will be ready to pounce shortly if he doesn't make an appearance soon and Jonathan Byrd wins Riviera.

Sorry J Byrd, didn't know you weren't in field this week, but my point is if some non-needle mover wins.
