Why Nick Price Is Joining The USGA Executive Committee

Tim Rosaforte at Golf World talks to USGA Executive Director Mike Davis and former World No. 1 Nick Price about the latter's decision to accept an invitation to the Executive Committee.

Davis discusses Price's ability to bridge a gap between the USGA and today's professionals, including on the distance issue.

Asked point blank if part of his mission was going after the ball, Price said that was a “TBD.”

“I have my thoughts, and I know what I think, but I don’t know what they think,” Price said. “I’m looking forward to working with the tech guys, and I have spent a little time with them. All I’m saying, this is an opportunity for us as professional golfers to do something with the USGA that’s unique.”

Does unique mean bifurcation of the rules between the pros and the everyday game or, simply as Woods said, rolling the ball back? Either way, having a well-respected Hall of Famer helping deliver the message will make it an easier sell.

I am not aware of Nick Price saying much, if anything, about the ball issue in the past. Is there anything on the record?

We have well respected people at the R&A - yet nothing has ever come of it. In fact it seem that they all turn to the 'Dark Side of the Force' doing little to protect the game or its courses.

Nick Price is not someone who is going to rock the boat, he just isn't that kind of guy.

This is basically a non-event.

Nick doesn't strike me as a boat rocker either but that doesn't mean a nice guy cannot help to get the right thing done. I'm not overly hopeful but maybe the USGA will surprise and have already made the decision to bifurcate and are looking for a 'shield' who is so 'nice' it will disarm the opposition?

Nick was one of the first great players to use solid core ball when he was winning all those events.

He's a good man, but he also won't be shy about voicing his thoughts (whatever they may be)

Lets look forward to the day when the coach and Trackman are there too. Surely the luddites would have to see that this is desirable progress

HAHAHA- wrong article! That was supposed to be on the JP thread!

Would love being a fly on their wall when discussion of US Senior Open sites and their purses is discussed. Mr Price may be AWOL.

Wake me up when this Executive Committee announces anything meaningful for those of us who play the game for fun.

Sorry to see Nick in this quagmire. The elimination of Mike Davis is all that's needed, for now.

@Keith - NYC I was under the impression that the USGA was only concerned with competitive golf.

If you are just playing for fun then I'm not sure what use you have for the USGA.

I am ready to find out I'm wrong about the organizations goals.

Nick will quickly realize this is a mistake, only question is how long it will take him to wriggle out of it.

Above, intended was not discussion about US Senior Open, but the US Sr WOMEN'S Open. The inaugural is apparently next year at Chicago Golf Club. Hate to say it, but its a yawner. Doubtful Mr Price signed on for this.
