Pelley: '18 Ryder Cup Will Be Bigger Show Than Ever Before, But Draws The Line At Smoke Tunnels!

I'm guessing the teams will not be suspended from harnesses and dropped into the proceedings. They will, however, be subjected to over-the-top antics. Cue the pyro!

In talking to Adam Schupak for one of three New York Times items tied to the Race to Dubai/Rolex Series, European Tour Chief Keith Pelley has given us advance notice: expect Ryder Cup pomp x 100.

Our first tee experience at the Ryder Cup is going to be sensational. The opening ceremony, it should be a show, right? It’ll be much more of a show in France than it’s ever been before. I can guarantee you it will be. Still, we’re not bringing the players out in smoke tunnels, right? You’ll still have that aura that golf has, that majesty that golf has, but there will be a big entertainment element, absolutely, no question.

I hate what the Ryder Cup has become...it's a grotesque perversion of the sport and it's sportsmanship.
P.S.-How do you hoot like drunken imbeciles in french?

Amen to that, jshaka. It's become an rover-hyped event in which both spectators and participants make asses of themselves. I'm tired of the boorish drunks in the gallery berating the players, just as I'm tired of the players displaying poor sportsmanship with their constant fist-pumps and screaming. A once dignified competition has been transformed into a rasslin' match.

Right on both accounts. As much as I'd like to think there's a way to restore some level of civilized behavior, this horse has left the barn, as they like to say.

Walker Cup is a better product and frankly what the Ryder Cup once was.

Huh? What? No smoke tunnels?

Guess that means they'll go with plan B and shoot players out of a cannon into a net behind the 3rd green...

@rgw the changes Pelley is describing will only make it worse.

The RC is an example of the issue golf has faced in today's consumer- tv "product" driven world. Do you maintain "tradition" and forsake the dollars or try to maximize the income from the "product". Sadly the Euro Tour HAS to squeeze every drop of revenue from the RC because without that money the tour may die. So the crowds are maxed out, the hype is maxed out and the fans are reminded all year that the RC is coming. The result is the event now looks more like the Phoenix Open than the "exhibition" it once was. The money though has been increased.

ANL: Yes. Absolutely. The Ryder Cup doesn't shouldn't be a circus, doesn't need to be a circus, but that seems to be what the PGAs love.

Absolutely! Wasn't that long ago when the RC was an intimate get together that lacked attendance. Greed is bad!

Golf's unshackled Ryder Cup with all its "perversions" is okay with me every two years. It's still a long way from cage fighting. TPC Scottsdale may be closer to that.

Wow. Suck it up boys. One week out of every two years and you people are complaining this bad already? This is all about ratings. For one week we can put civility in the back seat (slightly). It's not like they're throwing punches out there. Let them have some fun.
Judging by what Keith Pelley did so far, this will be an absolute embarrasment.

The real issue is golf is not a concert, a car race, a wrestling match--- and Nothing The Idiots in Charge Do Will Make it WHAT IT ISN'T. This will come off as a weak attempt to say ''golf is not enough'' to everyone.

Too Bad.

Hope Pelley learnt something from the toe-curlingly awful Sixes disaster, but somehow doubt it....

Pelly's challenging his inner Elton John in that photo!
