2017 PGA Final Round This And That

The forecast is improving after some more overnight rain softened things up, but landmines still linger in Sunday's forecast. Given Saturday's multiple pile-ups that appeased those who saw too many birdies at the U.S. Open, I'm hoping the players get a chance to attack some on Sunday.

Kevin Kisner's driver has been the key so far, and his Zurich Classic partner Scott Brown isn't surprised that he's kept the lead going into Sunday (Romine/Golfweek).  He's also embracing the difficulty of Quail Hollow (Lavner/Golfweek).

This is Hideki Matsuyama's best shot yet heading into a final round, writes Dan Kilbridge at Golfweek.

Jeff Babineau on the potential 2-for-291 run of Chris Stroud, the biggest longshot in some time with a chance to win a PGA Championship.

Webb Simpson is a member at Quail Hollow and thinks the setup is too much for a PGA. Someone's going to get a letter from Johnny! (Casey/Golfweek).

Jordan Spieth acknowledged that the PGA will be his toughest major to win, but Michael Bamberger says he can look to...Vijay Singh for inspiration. Though I'm pretty sure when Spieth wins his PGA, he will attend the Champions Dinner.

Luke Kerr-Dineen explores the six letter name theory in handicapping the final round.

Graham DeLaet had one of the greatest stretches of play you'll ever see Saturday, in sharp contrast to much of the field. (Maguire/ESPN.com).

The shot, hole and quote of the day (Ahern/Golfweek).

Rory McIlroy is thinking about shutting down his game again due to continuing rib issues. (Gray/Express)

I looked at the merchandise center vibe set by a DJ this year! (Morning Drive)

Phil Mushick is just loving it when Peter Kostis mentions the importance of line and speed.

That pin placement on 17 is a beauty. Hope Fowler or Thomas pulls through for their first major.

Boring tournament, feels like a run of the mill PGA Tour event, Quail Hollow is nothing special, the course looks boring as hell on tv, just like a Florida course with some trees.

@Rob S you would be correct. The 'Green Mile' stuff is way overdone. The course is lush but not very memorable beyond the copious dollars spent to remove trees and get a Fazio redesign. Because of the property's boxed-in, four-square configuration many of the holes double back on each other and it has made spectator flow a nightmare, not least because there are 2-3 times more of them vs the Tour event (Wells Fargo). Some of the pedestrian routing to/from the course is, frankly, bizarre but I'm sure the so-called experts had their input.

Majors except the Masters (can't speak to the Open Championship) are typically this way. Far too many bodies permitted on the grounds so their $10 beers can pay for next year's cattle call.

The noise spillover at greens and tee boxes from adjacent holes is significant. Between that and all the hangers-on it seems the players accept that they are center ring at a circus and get on with the job.

'Mobile Device Policy Enforcement' have 3-4 green-bibbed scowlers with every group (!) which, given the above, confirms that the PGA are more concerned with image control than with so-called distractions to the players.

They have dodged an entire cartridge belt's worth of bullets this week with respect to the weather given that the forecast before the tournament and every morning thereof was for strong storms. Bermuda in NC in May is a nice, even green. Bermuda in NC in August is almost always partially browned out due to heat. The divots at the practice tee tell the tale. In May the turf comes up in nice tidy chunks. For the PGA it looks like a minefield.

OK Kids. You can now mark it down. Justin Thomas wins this today.

On to your regularly scheduled Sundays now...

TNT is done, quit complaining and enjoy the free-for-all about to ensue.

Five Guys are in the fight.

I like Justin Thomas to prevail because of yesterday's aggressiveness and faultless backnine.

Kisner made double after glad-handing with the gallery. We'll see if he does that today.

Stroud showed stoicism. Back-to-back wins?

Matsuyama. It's only a matter of time before Asia golf starts ruling men's majors.

Oosthuizen. Has had a number of close calls since The Open win seven years ago.

Watched a bit of the first and second days. Course is one dimensional. Hope Hideki wins, but frankly, as long as it is anyone but the detestable Murray, I'm fine with.

Wake me up next April, where I'll have the BBC to look forward to after Sky's vastly superior coverage.

@PG

So if you don't want free coverage, then you can have all the pay for view TV, internet you wish, but since YOU have posted this ad, i guess you are part f the marketing effort. Shack has to eat to. I find no fault in his commercial involvement.

I've never heard of Grayson Murray. Why is he detestable?
08.13.2017 | Unregistered CommenterCottriab
This does feel like an everyday tour event. The telecast is blah, the course is blah, and many of the contenders are, at best, second teir. I have almost caught up to my DVR, looks like I'm going to have to find something else to do for a while.
08.13.2017 | Unregistered CommenterBDF
Stop the whining, everybody, it's turned into quite a tournament now! It'll probably end up with Chris Stroud winning, but right now it's really good!

5 way tie for the lead, birdies- bogeys, excitement....hope Rob and Patches are not watching

so you guys who are bemoaning this course as major worthy, please list your favorite major sites.

Right, Augusta is taken, Pebble is too short these days, the USGA has some of your list locked up. So I beg the question: do you prefer Quail Hollow or Valhalla?

'Cause Oak Hill in May could be a big fat problem.

Haha, Grayson has a pop at the Euro Tour and Center Cut needs a safe space. A bit of irony on Twitter seems to have gone right over his empty head...
08.13.2017 | Unregistered CommenterScott
Uh...OK Scott, had more to do with his politics, his disrespect of his fellow players, his creeping on high-school girls and his 'interaction' with a decent caddy...but whatever you say, dude.

Built that wall yet?

CC, aka Rupert Pupkin, I doubt you're the one to be delivering lectures on creepiness. Did you introduce yourself to GS at Birkdale? How did it go? Did he call security on you? We sure do need a wall, to keep psychos like you out.
08.14.2017 | Unregistered CommenterScott
You got it wrong Scott. A wall is needed to keep pyschos like you in!
08.14.2017 | Unregistered CommenterBrad
Too many whiners and cry babies. You found that tournament boring??? - Find another sport to watch.

The worst part of the whole week is the ludicrous number of commercials during the telecast. They need to find a new model.
