Well, he played one more regular Champions stop than Greg Norman, so he's got that going for him. Still, Seve Ballesteros made his retirement official at Carnoustie Monday.

While the announcement might as well have come ten years ago, it still feels a little weird that it truly is over for Seve. For a European kid during the 1980's (by the way, he won the Scandinavian Open not far from my home when I was 2) he was golf's answer to Diego Maradona, a figure whose importance is impossible to overestimate.

One doesn't need to be of European descent to share in this feeling. Ballesteros was unique and it is sad to see him go (even after his game had already left him).

He burned brighter than most, and earlier, which maybe explains his early exit. I agree that it's really sad he is not the phenomenal champion we knew in the late 70s and 1980s.

Still, I can't see why he'd want to miss out on lots of memorable rounds in the Florida swamps with all those charismatic Charles Schwab Cup combatants.
