Wie's 82

It pains me to read this and think of the damage she's doing mentally by playing right now. Assuming of course that her 82 was influenced by the wrist issues...

On Thursday she never drove the ball beyond the 250 yard mark, hit only four fairways in 14 attempts and 4 greens in 18 in regulation and was clearly light years away from the teenage prodigy who finished third in the US Open not so long ago.

The question being asked now, though, is whether her problems are physical or mental and whether she is suffering some form of burnout after getting too much too soon, including millions of Dollars in endorsements.

"I don't feel I shot the score."

Hmmm...well I feel you did.

And I love the usage of "Needle Pines" as the course name later in the article.

Get back to school, girlie, and try not to mess that up.

And her comment that the margin between her shooting an 82 and a shooting a 69 is so small.

She actually recovered well to score the 82, it could have been an 88 ...

This is like watching a car wreck now and it's easy to lose sight of the fact that this is a young girl who still deserves more sympathy than derision. As for her agent and her dad, on the oher hand, I'm not sure whose nose I want to tweak more.

I am sorry B.J., but I will be unable to attend your Amway seminar tonight.

If you want to stretch it, you can actually make the case that it's Annika Sörenstam's fault! Wie came along in the Colonial aftermath, so what better way (market-wise, that is) to prove your prodigal status than to do the same and tee it up against the men? I believe that it's primarily the realization on how much farther the men actually hit the ball that has caused her swing to deteriorate to the extent it has - a "swinger" who tries to gain distance just by swinging harder is inevitably going to lose his/her tempo. As a comparison, Ernie Els' similarly fluid motion got far jerkier for a few years, right after Tiger's arrival on Tour. I don't think all is lost for Wie, as long as she keeps to playing against female competitors and rediscovers the power that's encapsuled within her natural tempo and timing.

Will she be Andrea Jaeger and fade into oblivion, or maybe rebound like Pierce or Capriati? (Just talking about the athletic part, not saying Wie is into drugs or otherwise messed up.)

Sadly, I think that streak we are starting to see in the sky is Wie beginning her flame-out from trying to do too much too early.

Hopefully, for her sake, she can go to Stanford, BE a college student, and find what she really wants to do for herself and with her life. Apparently, this level of golf is not it at the moment.
