Former President Obama Gets A Valentino Dixon Original For Christmas

Michelle Obama purchased a Valentino Dixon original of Augusta National’s 12th hole as a Christmas gift for husband Barack Obama.

Max Adler, who wrote the original story that helped lead to Dixon’s release for a wrongful conviction, reports on how the gift came about.

His story was recently told again in a segment on HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that aired this October, which the former First Lady saw and was moved by. (Publicity disclosure: I’m interviewed in this show for my part in reporting the case.)

Dixon was both moved and surprised to get a phone call from Michelle’s assistant inquiring about an original.

Wayne Gretzky Lists Sherwood Home For $22.9 Million

Screen Shot 2020-10-23 at 10.46.51 AM.png

As the PGA Tour visits Sherwood Country Club below, Wayne Gretzky has listed his Richard Landry-designed and Lenny Dykstra-redecorated estate for $22.9 million, reports the LA Times’s Jack Fleming.

Overlooking the course hosting this week’s ZOZO Championship, the home has quite a history.

It’s actually Gretzky’s second time selling the home. The NHL Hall of Famer was the compound’s original owner after having it built in 2002, but five years later, he sold it to former baseball star Lenny Dykstra for $18.5 million.

The sale kicked off a dramatic saga that saw Dykstra lose the property to foreclosure after declaring bankruptcy, at which point it sold at auction on the steps of the Ventura County Courthouse for $760,712 (with the winning bidder taking on about $12 million in debt owed on the property).

Then, two years ago, Gretzky reunited with the home, shelling out $13.5 million for the promontory estate. That’s $5 million less than the price at which he had sold it to Dykstra roughly a decade earlier; if he gets his price this time around, he stands to make $9.4 million in profit.

Amnesty International Questions Saudi Arabia Hosting Women's Golf Events

The Guardian’s Ewan Murray reports that Amnesty International is wondering about the oddity of the women’s golf coming to Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this week the Ladies European Tour announced two November events in Saudi Arabia with $1.5m in prize money and called it a “landmark moment”.

From Murray’s story:

“With leading Saudi women’s rights activists currently languishing behind bars, there’s an unmistakable irony to the spectacle of Saudi Arabia throwing open its heavily-watered greens to the world’s leading women golfers like this,” Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, told the Guardian.

“Under the Crown Prince, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a major sportswashing drive – attempting to use the glamour and prestige of big-money sporting events as a PR tool to distract from its abysmal human rights record.”

This deer didn’t go all AJ Johnson and straddle the line for Katie Nolff, playing on an early fall day at Indian Springs in New York. But the deer was hungry and only slightly alarmed at the post-made putt celebration.

Not April Fools: This November 3rd (Eleven) Pine Valley Residents Voting On Ballot Initiative

Screen Shot 2020-09-28 at 8.38.30 PM.png

Jim Walsh in the Cherry Hill Courier-Post paints quite the bizarre picture of a ballot initiative facing the eleven constituents of the borough of Pine Valley. Yes, that Pine Valley.

The club’s George Crump and H.S. Colt course is typically ranked first in most rankings of top American courses despite losing some aesthetic and architectural edge in recent years. The “borough” of Pine Valley now appears to be adhering to Governor Phil Murphy’s push for shared services between boroughs with lower property taxes as the end goal.

So this November 3rd, you Pine Valley borougherers—all eleven of the thirteen registered to vote—you must decide whether to form a citizens’ commission to decide shared services in the region!

“This is a preliminary step, but an important one that the borough believes is prudent to consider,” Pine Valley Mayor Mike Kennedy said in a statement provided to the Courier-Post.

The ballot question – to be decided by the borough’s 11 registered voters — is “consistent with these goals,” Kennedy said.

The Camden County borough, which was incorporated in 1929, keeps a low profile in a forested area behind a rail line along East Atlantic Avenue.

There’s an understatement. I wonder if there are lawn signs with the lucky few Pine Valley residents announcing their position?

Anyway, Walsh paints a picture of Pine Valley from just outside the gates and tries to describe the exclusive club—errr, borough—that might like some help from neighboring areas despite its all-male membership, claims that the borough has “no say” in the club operation and the famous once-a-year open door policy.

One cabin-like building serves as the borough hall. The six-officer police department, which has reported no major crimes for the past two years, occupies a smaller structure next door.

That opportunity comes on the final day of the Crump Cup, a four-day competition for “mid-amateur” and senior golfers. The event is named for George Crump, a Philadelphia hotelier who began designing the course in 1913.

Mid-amateur senior golfers. That had to sting. Here’s a weird one:

This year’s competition, initially scheduled for Sept. 24-27, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the one-day opening drew almost 800 spectators in 2018, including four who were “evicted for tossing things onto the course,” according to minutes of a borough commission meeting from that time.

Tossing things? A divot back to a golfer? A green reading book? A pine cone? Details!

Anyway, it’s all bizarre and I recommend reading it from Walsh.

55 (-16) For 18 Holes!

Screen Shot 2020-08-28 at 8.34.29 PM.png

Also, Alexander Hughes parred the first and last hole at South Lakes in greater Tulsa to post 55.

From Adam Woodward at Golfweek:

Hughes, a former player at Central Oklahoma, tied the Guinness Book of World Records’ lowest score in a single round of golf with a 55 on Thursday at South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks, Oklahoma.

After making par on the first hole, Hughes made a hole-in-one on the 155-yard par-3 second, followed by another par. Then he got hot, birdieing Nos. 4-8 with an eagle on No. 9 to make the turn at 9-under 26. His birdie streak ended on No. 10 with a par on 11, but the four-year letter winner at Central got to 10 under with a birdie on No. 12.

The card and last hole attempt at birdie.

76er Matisse Thybulle has been posting warts-and-all videos from the NBA bubble in Orlando. Thanks to reader BB for highlighting volume 4 that shows how NBA quarantine golf looks. In a nutshell: you’ll feel very good about your game seeing what’s taking place down there—albeit with clubs not made for some of the best and tallest athletes in the world.

I’ve embedded a version that starts at the golf portion, but if you are one of those plot zealots who just has to see their reality shows from the start, you can go here.

I share this for the country club set of the world who need a story to know that no matter how much bickering, infighting and overall first world wackiness their club might be experiencing, there is always the latest from Bel-Air to top it.

According to TMZ, actress Lori Loughlin and husband/GFore creator/designer Mossimo Giannulli are resigning from Bel-Air as a result of their guilty pleas in the Rick Singer college admissions scandal. Things did not go smoothly.

Gareth Bale: “A lot of people have problems with me playing golf"

Screen Shot 2020-05-27 at 7.39.35 PM.png

An unbylined Reuters story quotes Real Madrid star Garreth Bale revealing to Erik Anders Lang just how much his passion for golf has been an issue for his career.

“A lot of people have problems with me playing golf,” Bale told U.S golf podcast The Eric Anders Lang Show.

“I don’t know what their reason is because I’ve spoken to doctors and everybody’s fine with it. The media has this perception that it’s not good for me, you should be resting, it can cause you injuries.

“(U.S. basketball player) Steph Curry plays maybe on the morning of a game. If I play two days before a game, it’s like ‘what’s he doing?’”

Here is the Apple podcast link to Lang’s discussion with Bale, where he talks about life on Real Madrid, how golf is his escape and how he replicated three famous par-3’s in his Wales backyard (it’s rather impressive!). Or the YouTube version:
