"They wait until they are by themselves trudging through the rough and dump a healthy portion of the ball."

I couldn't help but wonder about the caddies at Hamilton Farm after Bill Pennington shared this bit of advice from them in today's NY Times:

¶Take all the extra stuff in your bag out and leave it in the trunk of your car.

We all get used to riding in golf carts when it doesn’t matter if there are three windbreakers, an extra pair of shoes, a metal swing-training aid and 45 balls in the bag. If you’re about to play at a club with caddies, however, remove everything superfluous. That probably includes half the balls in your bag. A few caddies told me last week that if they are handed a bag with far too many balls clogging up a ball pouch, they wait until they are by themselves trudging through the rough and dump a healthy portion of the balls — new or otherwise — into the rough to lighten their load.

And it's so nice for the rough mowers too!
