This Is What It Looks Like When Lightning Strikes...

Thanks to reader Allen for these cell phone images of Saturday's lightning strike at Hawkshead Links in South Haven, Michigan on Saturday.  He writes: "Lighning hit in the eight fairway and blew a hole about 3 feet deep--all the way down to the irrigation line, which ruptured."

If this isn't a good enough reminder to clear the property when the horn sounds, I don't know what is.

Is that how god created all those bunkers at Whistling Straits? Efforts to destroy the place by the holy one foiled by the devilish Pete Dye?

Dustin, play away.

Maybe there were the Devil's A**hole at Pine Valley came from.

If I were the super at Hawkhead Links, I would leave it along - might propel the course to America's Top 100 list.

Even I couldn't miss a putt into that hole. Must be what the hole USED TO look like to tiger woods.

The size of the hole is most likely from all the water from the water main. I've never heard of a water pipe breaking from lightning before. I wonder if it hit directly on a head or a valve?

Friend of a friend was killed in a lightning strike last week.

A lightning strike 20-25 years ago on the 4th green at the UGA Golf Course killed one student and injured another AFTER the storm had passed and the sun came out. The old irrigation system (metal pipes) apparently acted as an "antenna." You could see where the lightning damaged the turf above the irrigation lines. Hear thunder? Find shelter. Always.
Hypothetical....If Geoff was God for a day, on which course would the first lightning strike be? I have a few thoughts but I'm sure others are better.

Jerry,
Too many to name that could use fewer trees or some fun little pot bunkers like we see pictured above!

Even Mother Nature doesn't like Arthur Hills courses.

Come on - this was caused by lightening? Are you sure it wasn't brushes and a high dew point?

I thought this was more drivel about Coore and Crenshaw's "natural work" from the photos sans caption ...
