2012 U.S. Open Round Two This, That And Comments

I've just returned from the course and it's noticeably softer tee-to-approach today in anticipation of no fog and some afternoon winds. As you can see on the hole location chart, there are plenty of defensive hole locations Friday and very few opportunities to attack.

I followed the McDowell group (morning feature group online) and they're all playing well, not to mention Sergio took a fantastic swing at an NBC mic and made clean contact.

You can get the feature group coverage here.

The leaderboard is here.

The USGA has sent out notes and forecast, below. Fire away with the comments!

COURSE SETUP: ROUND TWO OF THE 2012 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The following are details on the course setup for Round 2 of the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club, from Mike Davis, USGA Executive Director.

Weather Forecast for Friday (provided by Jake Swick with Thor Guard Weather) – There is some very light fog early this morning; generally look for hazy conditions again today. A few high clouds will pass by this morning; otherwise, expect lots of sunshine. Winds will be light in the morning before picking up in the afternoon; however they will be less than yesterday. Look for comfortably warm temperatures today and more of the same on Saturday. Increasingly, it is beginning to look like we will see some low clouds and possibly a little fog early and late on Sunday with partly sunny skies in between, followed by even more clouds, fog and maybe mist for Sunday night and Monday morning.

Green Speeds

This morning’s green speeds averaged in the low 13s on the USGA Stimpmeter immediately after the cut and roll, and likely will settle out in the mid 12s by midday.

Water Management

Hand-watering was applied to all greens last night; several greens received more water this morning based on firmness and moisture readings. All fairways, green approaches and closely mown areas also were irrigated last night. There has been an attempt to mimic the firmness conditions of the first round.

Total Course Yardage for Round 1 (tee marker settings to flagstick)

3,492 yards out, 3,519 yards in for 7,011 total yards

Hole-by-Hole Information

Hole 1 – 510 yards; hole location hugs the left side of the green about halfway back.

Hole 2 – 438 yards; hole location is back right.

Hole 3 – 220 yards; the tee markers are on the next-to-last teeing ground; the hole location is in the narrow, front-left portion of the green; any wind will push balls to the right; landing the ball short, in the green approach, will be the likely play.

Hole 4 – 441 yards; the hole location is about halfway back, tucked on the right side close to the fall-off.

Hole 5 – 473 yards; the tee markers are on the penultimate teeing ground; the hole location is front right; any wind out of the southwest will make approach shots challenging, since the green slopes from back right to front left.

Hole 6 – 495 yards; the hole location is back left; the approach shot will tend to “feed” to this hole location with the slope of the green.

Hole 7 – 275 yards; the tee markers are near the back of the next-to-last teeing ground; the hole location is tucked in the back-right quadrant.

Hole 8 – 192 yards; the hole location is front right.

Hole 9 – 448 yards; the hole location is center left, just past the front-left quadrant, which is severely pitched.

Hole 10 – 417 yards; the hole location is center left.

Hole 11 – 443 yards; the hole location is far back center.

Hole 12 – 457 yards; the tee markers are on the penultimate teeing ground; the hole is back right, near the fall-off to the closely mown area.

Hole 13 – 182 yards; the tee markers are on the back teeing ground; the hole location is front center, just past the bunker in front of the green.

Hole 14 – 411 yards; the hole location is right, just over the right bunker.

Hole 15 – 143 yards; the tee markers are on the back and to the far right of the front teeing ground, making for an interesting angle to the back-left hole location, which is just over a slight knob.

Hole 16 – 609 yards; the tee markers are on one of the middle teeing grounds; the hole location is left, near the fall-off the to the closely mown area.

Hole 17 – 515 yards; with predictions of relatively calm conditions, the tee markers are on the back of the right teeing ground; the hole location is front right, just over the bunker.

Hole 18 – 342 yards; the hole location is center left; being above the hole location makes for a very quick putt.
