Telegraph: "There is a strong case to strip Muirfield of the Open Championship altogether unless it reforms its ways."

Strong words from Oliver Brown in the Telegraph about the 2013 Open host in light of Augusta National's addition of two female members.

Consider the precedents. In 1990, the US PGA was staged at Shoal Creek in Alabama, a club that refused to allow black members. Cue a firestorm of protest that forced even the venerable Augusta to rethink, leading ultimately to a decree that no club in America with discriminatory membership policies could host a tournament. Shoal Creek, as it turned out, did not host another nationally recognised event – the 2008 US Junior Amateur – until it ditched its exclusionary stance.

So, over to you, Muirfield. It is not as if the club cannot hear the righteous storm gathering at its gates. Catriona Matthew, a former women’s world No1, implored the club to “follow in Augusta’s footsteps”.

Harriet Harman, deputy leader of the Labour Party, inveighed: “It’s completely wrong that Muirfield is still men-only, especially after a brilliant summer of women’s sport. It’s old-fashioned and out of touch.”

Perhaps the most memorably scathing indictment was delivered by Scottish comedienne Elaine C Smith, who said: “I’m appalled by Muirfield on so many levels but I suppose, outside a gay disco or circus, this is the only place men can wear a lavender V-neck and tartan trews without being laughed at by women.”
