R.I.P. Andy Williams

The legendary crooner hosted the PGA Tour's San Diego stop 21 times under various tournament names including the Andy Williams-San Diego Open Invitational, the Wickes-Andy Williams San Diego Open, the Isuzu-Andy Williams San Diego Open, the Shearson Lehman Brothers Andy Williams Open and of course most memorably of all, the Shearson Lehman Hutton Andy Williams Open.

The Kansas City Star has a nice photo gallery of Williams, including this shot with Tom Watson.

Sorry to see the guy go, but sooner or later we all do. My Mom was a big fan and so I, too became one.

What... only 26k for a win; those WERE the days. So long Andy. My mum was the same age; every Sunday morning before church.

Bing, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Bob Hope, Andy Williams, Danny Thomas, Ed McMahon, Dinah Shore all have passed. Members of a bygone era. Old time stars that gave their names and time to pro golf events on the PGA Tour and LPGA. I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Please chime in.

Just recalled Glen Campbell as well who is not doing great. Did Frank Sinatra ever host an event?

I think I remember reading that The Chairman of the Board lent his name his own self to a Palm Springs event for a year or two in early 1960s...Yep: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sinatra_Open_Invitational
And no, I don't actually remember the tournament, though I do remember 1963. Alas.

I wonder if he was an organ donor. Did he leave them in San Francisco?
R.I.P. Mr. Williams.
