Video: Phil Fires 60 With Power Lipout On Last Hole

Fighting through the painful emotions of seeing old sparring partner Vijay Singh overcome some seriously bad press, Phil Mickelson fired an 11-under 60 in the opening round of 2013 Waste Management Open play.

As of now, the PGA Tour's YouTube page has posted Phil's birdie putt on the 8th hole, his 17th, which he left short. Why, I have no idea.

Thankfully, the putt we actually want to see was posted by a fan is now posted by the tour. Note the multiple cameras and great work by NBC's crew to capture the moment.

That's one of the worst lip outs I've ever seen and to miss shooting 59. Brutal. If only he had used deer antler spray this morning.

Bones reaction priceless

The worst lipout I've seen since Nick Price's putt for 62 at Augusta in ´86...

Watching on computer in my office. Putt misses, hand slams on the desk, very loud groan. Lady next door rushes in with concern - oh, its nothing, I'm fine.

Thanks to GC for getting it on line. (+Verizon!)

Didn't Tiger have a smilar lip-out to shoot 62 at Southern Hills in the PGA.

11 birdies, no bogeys. Pretty stellar, Phil. And who saw that coming after last week's desultory play? Golf is a crazy game.
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterSari
Hey Rub, how about the horse scrotum behind the ear, would that have helped?!?

BrianS, hilarious!

OMG, that that was brutal...

SO what are the early returns on Notah? Seems to me like he's doing a darn solid job. Maybe some Notah Bingo?!?
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
Shouldn't the "harringtonjoel" who posted the video have been out following Padraig?

Thanks Lauren, I put it in place of the fan grab.

Most emotion I've ever seen out of Dufner...

I wonder if Phil's 1938 movie prop pants are now a good or bad luck token?
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAG
"SO what are the early returns on Notah?"

Not afraid to eat a little crow...Notah is doing a great job...but wait till he calls Tiger's shots...slurp
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterBobby D
Some mighty fine golfing, yall.

Brian S.-funny stuff!

Haven't seen any golf today, but Notah doing well IMHO, and what does Notah Bingo mean?
01.31.2013 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
shoulda been a 58, the putt on 8 hung on the lip as well

Notah's comment on tour pro's being "Drama Queens" after Kyle Stanley's display on 12 tee was good...i wonder if any of the pro's care what he says
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterUmp
Phil switched back from claw and shoots 59?
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmen Coroner
Meant 60
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmen Coroner
Still clwawing. No wonder it lipped out.
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmen Coroner
Lisped out.
01.31.2013 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
Michael Collins or Stephanie Wei--who is worse?
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterJJ
DTF can go bingo Notah. I'll bingo Wei. And who the hell is Michael Collins - other than the one from Apollo 11.
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
digger, you know, like bingo except with words. We get together a list something like this:

-slurper
-sycophant
-lap dog
-blue curtain
-butt kisser
-"decent college player" (personal fave)
-Friend of Tiger
-BFF
-luggage valet
(add to it as you see fit)

Then we set an over/under on how many posts it takes to complete the list!

I think it's a wonderful idea but haven't gotten much traction yet...mainly because ADG is making himself scarce during weeks when the tournament at hand does not *count*.

NOTE: next tourney that *counts* is Matchplay, then Doral and then the Masters.

FTR, Sir Bob Charles has 1 win that *counts*. Hmm, but there is that pesky little deer spray issue.

Back on topic...

...what are the odds Phil wins this event? I hope the heck he does. If he does wonder if it will be viewed as a signal for him to move back to AZ?

You know Geoff Ogilvy recently picked his family up and moved from California back to AZ. His reasoning was that missing out on the money games at Whisper Rock was the reason he wasn't so sharp when he took his game out on Tour. There we go, another precedent!
01.31.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
Is Jason Dufner the coolest guy in golf? His playing partner has just lipped out a putt for 59 and he's wandering round the green tapping down spike marks! Priceless!
02.1.2013 | Unregistered Commentertitleist38
Was watching the nighttime replay on Golf Channel...

ok, i get it ... his putt lipped out.

What's the over/under on the 'lip out' being replayed this weekend... 59?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterJohn C
That's Blue Velvet Curtain.

On a previous thread people were talking about the differences between European and US television. The interviews by Mark Rolfing are great. He walks through the round, or asks specific questions so we can understand what the players are thinking out there. I don't like the 'how do you feel about the round' questions too generic.

Specifically like how Phil gave credit to Bones on one of the par 3s. That he was thinking about a different club. It makes me feel better when I'm out playing to know that the top players have the same questions that I do.

Regarding Stephanie Wei. I used to read her blog quite a bit. Several commenters would suggest she tighten-up what she wrote. After about the fifth time of her suggesting that if they don't like her 'style' they just don't read it, so I just stopped reading her site.
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterMattS
Since it looks like DTF is the only one who is giddy over Notah, judging by the lack of response from others here, I might as well help him out with a review.

During the first round, he was bland and was almost void of insight.

Notah: "Kaymer was 2-over after the first three holes. That's not how you want to start a tournament."

Really? No shit. I had no idea that Kaymer wouldn't want to start a tournament like that.

#sarcasm

Most of Begay's comments hover around that level of quality.

However, I will give him a couple of mercy points. In the 30 mins I watched, there were no references to his BFF. And, there were no glaring screw ups.

3 out of 10.
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
ADG, I'm surprised you are watching a tournament that doesn't *count*. Why?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
"Notah's doing a great job" -Bobby D-

"Notah's comment on tour pro's being "Drama Queens" after Kyle Stanley's display on 12 tee was good" -Ump-

"Seems to me like he's doing a darn solid job." -DTF-

Looks like you're hanging out there alone ADG...certainly that's a normal state of affairs.
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
One thing I Notahced about Notah...he tends to speak low, almost whisper at times. I kinda like that...reminds me of the old days when the announcers were next to the green had to whisper so as not to spook the players. Or in the case Sam Snead, pizz them off. Rosberg, Dave Marr and some of the old Shell's WW of Golf announcers did it.

"Well I'm right next to the players on the 12th green Kenny, have to keep my voice down."

It's a nice break from all the crowd noise yelling and screaming "Mashed Potatoes", etc
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterBobby D
Well, nobody's playing Notah Begay Bingo, but DTF IS playing Abu Dhabi Golfer Bingo.

I love it!

Does it "count"? Brilliant!
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
Bobby D - all the on-course reporters who are not up in a green side tower talk beneath their breathe often. Pepper, Maltbie, Koch, Julian Tutt and Ken Brown on the Euro tour (I am watching the Dubai event right now and Ken Brown is doing that).

Can you please list the all the on-course announcers who don't speak low and tend to whisper?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
sure...Feherty, McCord don't whisper all the time...of course most of the announcers keep their voices low, but I think Notah goes "lower than most"...I will say, though, the Euro announcers can get waaaay down there...Ken Brown goes way deep...with Renton's voice it's the Dewars that does it :o)
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterBobby D
McCord works in a CBS greenside tower next to one of the later holes. He is nowhere near the players when they are playing.

Feherty should be fired. And he is far too low a standard to which to compare Notah. Even I am fair, after all.

DTF, you're got Bobby D, Ump, and .... yourself? (WTF) all aboard Notahmania.

Anybody else to add to the list?

And, are you keeping yourself on your list?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
Hey ADG, since Notah's affiliation with Tiger surely lands him at the bottom of the totem pole (no pun intended) with you regardless of how qualified he is and/or how well he performs...

...how about giving us a list of on course announcers that fill the rest of the spectrum? Or should we say your spectrum?

10 - ?

8 - ?
7- ?

5 - ?

3 - Notah

Be nice for us to know who *counts*, and who doesn't. And where's the line of demarcation? Is a 7 viewed as acceptable? A 5?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
Hey...I reserve the right to withhold Notace on Notah until he calls a game when Tiggie is in the field...I mean, if starts that slurping thingy...well...
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterBobby D
DTF - looks like the Notahmania fan club is down one - what's happening?

Why don't you write our your list of favorite on-course announcers? Mine will be the inverse of that.

Can you do that?

Does Torrey count as a major? Does it count? Shall we elevate the Farmers Insurance/ Buick Invitational / Andy Williams Izuzu Invitational to major status? Shall we make it count?

Let me know if that works for ya?
02.1.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAbu Dhabi Golfer
Bobby D ate crow and said Notah "is doing a great job", so his vote counts - ha!

Ump and me makes 3! Obviously Judy Rankin is also in our camp, I'm sure you think she's a dumb idiot.

And then there's you...see if you can get someone else to join you, someone who agrees with 3 of 10.

We've long since cleared up the rules on what *counts*. Only events with 70 or more OWGR points, plus Memorial when you find the winner to be suitable and the Euro's aren't tired. FYI, Farmers awarded 50 and Qatar 48.

In case you missed it, win totals for events that *count* are:

- Kenny Perry 3
- Rory 4
- Phil 8
- Vijay 9
- Bob Charles 1
- Calc 1
- Daly 2
- T Clark 1
- Jet Ski 1
- 3 Iron -0-
- Tiger 41

As for on-course announcers, I'm really can't think of a single one that's doing a better job than Notah... B.R. Brown, nope. Kostis, nope. Feherty, nope. I do like Maltbie.

Did you know Rory is now in his 7th calendar year as a touring professional? Time flies huh....
