Nicklaus, Player And Trevino Tee It Up One Last Time?

The Demaret division may be buried on a Monday and Tuesday of Legends of Golf week, but Adam Schupak tagged along for the Jack Nicklaus/Gary Player and Lee Trevino/Mike Hill foursome and provides a detailed account of the round.

It sounds like Jack still gets irritated if he doesn't perform, even though it was his first competitive round in 8 years and in a setting where he could shoot 100 and no one could care.

“I had no desire to go out there just to enjoy the day,” Nicklaus explained. “It’s a tournament. That’s why I don’t play anymore because I can’t do what I want to do.”

It is a realization that top athletes in other sports have to accept decades earlier. Pro golfers seem to run on batteries. Trevino and Hill appear fully charged for Tuesday’s final round, trailing leaders Frank Beard and Larry Ziegler, who shot 64, by one stroke. The competitive juices again will be flowing.

“We can’t compete anymore on the tour, so this is our (entire) year right here,” Trevino said.
