Cal Takes Pac-12 Lead On Homa's Course Record 61

The Cal men's golf team has continued their amazing 2013 run and for good measure were led by senior Max Homa's course record 61 in first round Pac 12 Championship play at The Los Angeles Country Club's North Course.

Having seen some of Homa's round and the setup, I can attest to this quote from the unbylined Pac 12 report which includes scores and a photo gallery:

Cal senior Max Homa shot a 9-under 61 in the opening round to establish a new course record, a feat made more impressive by the fact that the first round scoring average was 73.29, more than three strokes above par.

“The course is playing tough today,” said LACC director of golf Jim Schaeffer. “[Homa's] round is by far the best we’ve seen here in a long time. He broke the course record by one shot. He had nine birdies and no bogeys; that’s extremely impressive.”

Cal has won 9 of 11 tournaments they've entered this year, an almost unfathomable total on any level of college golf, but made even more impressive considering the elite nature of Cal's schedule.

After 36-holes, Cal holds a 9-stroke lead over host UCLA, and Homa's 61-70-131 total leaves him 3 shots ahead of teammate Michael Weaver with two rounds to go.
