Captain's Picks Do Help The Cause (On Paper)

Hate to pay attention to Tom Watson's remarks about a pure Ryder Cup team when it's the Presidents Cup that we should be focusing on. Watson said the pure team would come only from automatic selections, but Douglas Han of the Tee Sheet tipped me off to a post he did a while ago on the role that Captain's selections have played in helping the American cause.

It's worth a look if you are ready to ponder the Ryder Cup a year early. Or a future without Captain's picks.

He also addresses the different sample sizes.

And as we have learned with next week's Presidents Cup where Jordan Spieth will make his debut, sometimes the picks just bring a different energy to the team and matches which no stats can explain.
