2013 Walker Cup Saturday Afternoon Photos And Wrap-Up

A magnificent day in all respects at The National Golf Links as the American's surged to an 8-4 lead following the afternoon singles. Judging by the Tweets I saw, the Golf Channel coverage captured some of the brilliance that is National and the Walker Cup. Only there was not enough of it. (Another two-hour window is delivered by Golf Channel Sunday from 4-6 PM ET.)

An afternoon wind shift conspired with fresh hole locations to give NGLA an entirely different look compared to the morning, adding to pleasure factor for those hoping to see C.B. Macdonald's masterpiece shine in many lights. Throw in the perfect weather, the most polite galleries I've ever been around, tremendous sportsmanship displayed by players and caddies, and the entire day was a stirring celebration of all that is beautiful about our sport.

As for the matches, here is Ryan Herrington's account of the big U.S. surge with match results and Sunday pairings.

Golf World's Brendan Moehler covered the most dominant singles performance of the day, Max Homa's win over Max Orrin, an especially remarkable win since Homa sat Saturday morning and looked a bit off in Friday's practice round.

Justin Thomas, playing his last event for USA as an amateur, may be in jeopardy Sunday. He's already sitting out the foursomes.  Herrington reports.

Here are some of my images from Saturday afternoon. You'll notice I mostly followed the popular Matthew Fitzpatrick vs. Michael Weaver match. Both are a joy to watch. Fitzpatrick for his tactical approach and fast play, Weaver because he seems to be such a complete player, though both could benefit from getting the ball on the ground sooner when approaching the National's greens. Then again, that could be said for most modern elite players.
