When one comes to the quality of the bunkers and other hazards we pass into realm of much dispute and argument. Primarily bunkers should be sand bunkers purely, not composed of gravel, stones or dirt. Will Gray on one of the great stories this week: geezer Kenny Perry making the cut at Pinehurst and holing an extraordinary shot after the round. Perry said the day was one of the most demanding he'd ever experienced in a major.

“I thought it was going to go over the green and then all of a sudden people started jumping up in the air,” Perry said. “That’s the longest shot I’ve ever made in my life, period.”

But there was this 220-yard hybrid on 14, one of the few roars of the day:
