Here We Go! Pinehurst Gets A New 250-Yard Par-3 Tee Just Weeks Before The U.S. Open(s)

Maybe the women will pay No. 6 on Pinehurst No. 2 as a driveable par-4? Otherwise, for the life of me, I can't figure out the thinking behind the last minute addition of a new 250-yard tee to Pinehurst's sixth hole where the green is hard to his from 150 yards! The last minute addition was revealed in ESPN's Thursday conference call with Andy North, Paul Azinger and Curtis Strange to discuss the U.S. Open(s) at Pinehurst.

As I noted on the video posted a few days ago, the run-up here is pretty tough unless the player places the tee shot in a tiny window. That means the direct shot to the green must be pretty precise sincet he fall-off to the left and fronting bunker is incredibly deep.

Extend the hole by fifty yards--even for today's players hitting 200-yard 6-irons--and it all sounds a bit excessive.

That's the vibe I got from 2-time U.S. Open champion and major Pinehurst lover Curtis Strange, who revealed the new tee after playing the course a few weeks ago.

It can play right at 7,500 yards long, and they just put a new tee on the 6th hole, the par‑3.

Get this, guys:  One of the toughest greens you ever want to have on a par‑3 to try to hit.  They just put a new tee in three weeks ago.  I don't know what that says about it, but it's going to play 250.  Now, have some of that, guys.

But anyway, they've made it plenty tough and put in new tees.
