Grillo'd! Rory Nearly Taken Out By Tee Shot

You don't see this happen on professional level very often with marshals and officials to tell people not to tee off at the driveable 17th, but PGA Tour rookie Emiliano Grillo hit into Rory McIlroy's group and nearly took out one of the world's best players.

The scene is the Frys.com Open at Silverado. Bob Harig at ESPN.com explains that poor communication was the cause, Rory was good-natured about what could have been a disaster and even dropped a nice line about his misery on the greens.

Because the hole was playing short, groups were waving players up from the green. And that's what Grillo thought had occurred in this instance, although apparently McIlroy was unaware.

Of all people, McIlroy, Grillo thought.

"Yeah, that would have been bad," he joked. "Good aim. He's got a bright shirt. That's why."

But in seriousness, Grillo said he hoped to find McIlroy to apologize. "We thought they were waiting for us to it," he said. "I heard that I almost hit him, but I really apologize."

Golf Central had the near-miss in its highlight reel, which won't last online long, so watch it while you can.
