David Fay On The U.S. Open Queue

Much is on the line next week for the USGA, Chambers Bay, Fox Sports and the future of modern U.S. Open venues. Though the USGA appears to be lining up mostly classic venues, interspersed with an Erin Hills and Torrey Pines, next week will influence future bold moves like the selection of Chambers Bay.

While we won't get Ian Poulter's take until after the event, if at all (Will Gray has the breaking news on Poulter's Twitter declaration Thursday), former USGA Executive Director David Fay handicaps the future with an eye toward Chambers working well enough.

SOMEWHAT LIKELY EVERY 12-18 YEARS

Torrey pines (two Opens, including 2021)
Big crowds, great weather, hotels contiguous to the golf course, knockout views of the Pacific Ocean. Few get excited about the course, but it's a place that, over the years, has produced great PGA Tour champions and Tiger in the Open.

It just could be so much better. But...we'll take the great finishes, weather and San Diego vibe...

TO BE DETERMINED,BUT POSSIBLY EVERY 12-18 YEARS

Chambers Bay (2015 Open)
Erin Hills (2016 Open)
L.A.C.C. (2023 Open)
The anticipation for Chambers Bay is high. And I think the course reviews will be good. That said, I wonder how long it will take an Open contestant to channel his inner Dave Hill and complain the USGA has ruined a good gravel pit.

Come on Ian, you know you want to Tweet that!
